We knew this group was stacked with talent, but Nebraska’s Class of 2024 also had a large group of athletes who took their game to the next level this year. That includes some high-impact junior seasons in the recently concluded high school season, and we’ve got plenty of stock risers in the wake of this fall’s excitement.
So, as we do for all our rankings updates, we now present a group of 2024s who elevated their game against some of Nebraska’s best prep competition.
Long’s successful 2022 calendar year goes beyond her huge commitment to Big East powerhouse Marquette. She also led Lincoln Southwest to one of its best volleyball seasons ever and showed that she is more than ready to take on the pressures of collegiate volleyball. First, though, there’s unfinished business on the prep side.
Douglas is quickly cementing her status as one of Nebraska’s most impactful liberos, regardless of graduating class. The Skutt Catholic junior made a huge splash with her commitment to Southern Cal, and Douglas followed that up by re-writing the SkyHawk record books. Douglas’ unique role in middle-back defense allowed her to pile up some head-spinning stats en route to an outstanding 2022 campaign.
Pitt is it! Meyer soared up our initial 2024 rankings after some stellar performances in the VCNebraska gym. That ascent continued this fall with Meyer’s excellent work in the Norris libero jersey, and all this success yielded a big-time commitment to Pittsburgh.
Wohlgemuth’s impact in Lincoln Lutheran’s undefeated championship run cannot be overlooked. Not only was this junior outside hitter an effective terminator in the frontcourt, but she also played a vital back-row role that included her lethal serving behind the line. Next year’s campaign will be a big one for Wohlgemuth.
Just another year atop the Nebraska assists leaderboard for Bradford. More importantly, however, the junior setter’s leadership and all-around prowess helped the Spartans reach their first state tournament since 2008. That might be a precursor to an even bigger 2023 for Bradford, and it starts in the rapidly approaching club season.
Here’s another Silver Hawk who keeps finding ways to stand out in big contests. Little took the reins of Southwest’s libero jersey and anchored one of the state’s most impenetrable floor defenses. Keep an eye on Little’s continued progress with VCNebraska.
There’s no way we could leave Herrick out of this feature after everything she accomplished with Amherst this fall. The Broncos broke through to the semifinal round of the state tournament behind Herrick’s 400-kill onslaught in her junior year. She can hit in the middle, on the outside, and do just about anything else you could ask from a six-rotation standout.
It’s no surprise to see Borner getting into a rhythm after her impressive spring season with Nebraska Elite. She promptly took control of DC West’s libero spot this fall and made more of the brilliant defensive plays we’ve come to expect from Borner. It was a major factor in the Falcons’ historic appearance in this year’s postseason.
Wood’s postseason dominance made her a mandatory addition to this feature. She has rocketed up the 2024 rankings with her incredible all-around displays for Overton, which finished runner-up in Class D2 this year. Six-rotation middle blockers are a rare sight, but Wood’s versatility makes her all-around presence a necessity for the Eagles.
Few liberos had a more productive 2022 season than Rice. The Waverly junior piled up well over 500 digs this year, and that’s while the Vikings went toe-to-toe with many of Class B’s heavy hitters. Frontcourt firepower has been a big storyline for many of Waverly’s recent lineups, but 2022 was all about ball control.
There’s quite a dominant offensive force rising at Southern Valley. Bose was one of this season’s most prolific small-town attackers, as she put down nearly four kills per set on a searing 0.332 hitting percentage. Performances like this will raise eyebrows no matter where you are, and Bose helped put her Eagles on the map.
How about this Hastings libero? Benson compiled quite a highlight reel after the 2022 season, with both her relentless floor defense and steady serve receive standing out for the Tigers.
