Teams from Texas are all ramping up in order to bring their best game in the most important moment of the season and even those that won’t make the trip to Chicago are also in their best form after months of practice and competing together.
This past weekend, we followed one of the tournaments that were going on in the Houston area, the Skyline Classic #10, held at the popular Houston Skyline Volleyball Club. We were following the 17 Girls Division, which had nine teams from the region in action, and are bringing our positional reports and All-Tournament team selection during the week.
Here are five liberos who brought a lot of defensive solidness to their teams:
The electric libero of W Revolution 17 Premier was in her usually dominant form on the backcourt. Very active and intelligent, Schramm made a big impact in the team’s play by displaying impressive solidness with her passing and making several big plays on defense. Besides always been on the perfect spot to get touches on defense, the libero was also very technical and reliable when contacting the ball, generating several transition opportunities for her team.
Highlights
Alexa McCarthy
Alexa McCarthy
Katy United 17 Fathom’s starting libero, McCarthy was one of the most productive defenders in the event. Her ball control was excellent all day and I saw her dig some really powerful swings in her left-back position in different matches. She also had a strong presence in the team’s serve-receive system, covering a big area of the court and consistently delivering good passes. McCarthy also did a very good job when covering her hitters, keeping her eyes on the ball while she moved to her designated spot.
Kendra Denoon
Kendra Denoon
Denoon was playing one age group up with Hou Stellar 17 Select, but the class of 2025 libero was so comfortable and confident on the court, that it didn’t even looked like that was the case. Her movement on the backcourt was really smooth and intelligent and it allowed the libero to step up and make some big plays. Denoon has an interesting combination of ball control and reflexes which generated several digs. She also had good moments from the service line, going on some long runs.
Kylie Murphy
Kylie Murphy
Murphy was among the most impressive players in the entire tournament, doing an excellent job on the backcourt for her W Revolution 17 Adidas team. Very technical and quick, she was on fire on defense, using her ball control to get a lot of digs. Her passing was also on point all day and Murphy also did a lot of other things really well, such as covering her hitters and setting in transition. The left-handed libero also came up big from the service line, getting multiple aces on several matches.
Briana Galvan
Briana Galvan
Galvan had a major role in Xcel VB 171 Adidas’ serve-receive system, covering a large chunk of the court and consistently delivering good passes. Her excellent technical skills were a big factor as besides having great success with her first contact, the libero also made very few errors in her actions. Galvan also displayed great positioning on the backcourt, often tracking and keeping in play some bad passes and digs from teammates.
