The Emerald City Classic tournament is back for its 35th year! The University of Washington hosts some of the top volleyball teams from Oregon, Washington, and northern Idaho, and PrepDig was lucky enough to see them in action.
Below are a handful of setters that caught our attention over the course of the first day.
Shay-Chang is a top setter in the 2024 class, so it is no surprise she stood out when watching NPJ 17-1 play. She ran a 5-1 exceptionally well. She showcased precise and consistent location, a major factor in this team’s ability to terminate. Difficult passes proved no problem, Shay-Chang would get her hands on it and put up a beautiful ball.
Highlights
Eastwood ran a 5-1 during the set I watched WVBA 16-1 play. She did a good job distributing the ball around the court and knew when to feed her terminal pins. She is athletic and has a quick release on the ball.
Highlights
Daily ran a 5-1 when watching SIVBC 15-1 play up in 16 Open. Her smooth footwork and soft touch on the ball put out some gorgeous sets. Only a class of 2026 athlete, she already does a great job setting against the grain to create one-on-one opportunities for her attackers.
Highlights
Etter was back like she never left! Being out with an injury, ECC was her first tournament back, and she did not skip a beat, running a 6-2. Her play was smooth, confident, and controlled. She is an offensive threat and was not afraid to dump the ball when the other team least expected it. Her defensive abilities are top notch- digging balls and making impressive moves from right back.
Highlights
Gonzales executed a 6-2 system on day one at ECC, but when watching them on day two she was their primary setter, running a 5-1. With athletic feet, she is able to get her hands on almost everything. She was confident in her play, and was an exceptional leader on the court. She stayed in to attack on the right side, and for good reason. With some serious hang time and a hammer of an arm, she proved lethal from the pin.
Jones was running the show on Space Needle 17-1 as their primary setter. Executing a 5-1, she has a soft touch on the ball and athletic footwork. She was an absolute workhorse, running all over the court, getting her hands on the ball, and putting up something for her hitters to work with.
Highlights
Mitchell was definitely one of the top 2025 setters in attendance at ECC. As their primary setter, she worked relentlessly to keep the team in system. She fed her pin hitters the ball to terminate and worked off trickier passes to feed the middles. However, she has become very offensive and aggressive when setting, dumping and attacking on the second ball. When hitting, she is a setter that flies and can pound the ball with no problem.
Highlights
Saldana ran a 6-2 for Puget Sound. She oozes athleticism and is an incredibly talented setter. She has a soft touch and a quick release on the ball, making her hard to read. She does a good job setting against the grain and pushing the ball to the pins from crazy distances.
Highlights
Wright ran a 6-2 for NPJ 17-1. Her athleticism and court presence immediately stood out. She has great footwork to get her hands on the ball. Her release is clean and precise. With some really talented middles on the team, she does a good job feeding them as often as possible.
