We’re just a handful of days away from the first matches of the Nebraska high school season. With that in mind, it’s time for our most prominent feature series of the entire month: preseason all-state.
First, we have to mention how difficult it is to pare down to such a small list. These all-state teams force us to assemble theoretical rosters of roughly 15 athletes. So many more players are worthy of this high honor, requiring us to make very narrow distinctions. Have no doubt that we’ll be casting a wide net of coverage once the season begins.
Now that we’ve briefly discussed the process, we can bring on the teams. All classes will be covered, and we’re starting with a big one.
Here is our Nebraska preseason all-state team for Class A.
Medeck highlights our Class A all-state team as a multi-year star for Papillion-La Vista South. The senior outside hitter put down more than four kills per set last season and was a mainstay in the Titan backcourt.
No Class A hitter averaged more kills per set last year than Dalton. Fremont leaned on their Class of 2025 pin hitter for five-and-a-half kills per set, and half of Dalton’s high school career is still in front of her.
Traudt is another outside hitter entry from the junior class. She compiled well over 400 kills in her sophomore campaign on an equally impressive 0.329 hitting efficiency. That kind of production will put Grand Island Senior High in the Class A chase this season.
Ries has been a model of consistency over her past two season with Norfolk. She has posted 370+ kills in each of those campaigns and will be an all-around contributor for the Panthers in her senior season.
This transfer will turn a lot of heads. Paymal is joining Omaha Westside this year her efficient scoring pedigree to the outside hitter spot. Her hitting efficiency ranked highly among her 2025 peers last fall, and that ought to translate well to the 2022 Class A runner-up.
Highlights
Tvrdy is a perfect starting point in our middle blocker discussion. The Papillion-La Vista star and Oregon commit accumulated nearly four kills per set last season while only playing across the frontcourt. Middles with those numbers don’t come around often.
Highlights
Venable has set the pace for Class of 2025 middles in Class A. Her incredible 0.401 season hitting percentage for Lincoln Pius X last fall makes Venable an easy choice for our all-state squad, even if her future impact is at a different position.
Hart’s dramatic upward trajectory has garnered her a spot on our all-state team. She caught most observers off guard with an impressive 0.348 hitting percentage last fall in her first season as a full-time starter. Gretna will harness that terminal ability once again.
Highlights
Long’s place atop Nebraska’s assists leaderboard will likely persist in 2023. She was Class A’s most productive distributor as she helped Lincoln Southwest to a #2 seed and a spot in the 2022 semifinals. The Marquette commit hopes to go one step further in her final season.
Bradford has been an indispensable part of Lincoln East’s resurgence on the Class A stage. She racked up well over ten assists per set in 2022, which yielded over 1,000 total helpers in just one season.
Hickey is about to embark on her fourth year as Papillion-La Vista’s starting setter. She will surely cement her permanent place in the Monarch record books, as she enters the 2023 season with over 3,200 career assists and a wealth of other accolades to her credit.
Campie has already made plenty of headlines since she was a freshman starter from Omaha Marian in 2021. An uptick in production as a sophomore ended with ten assists per set and some impressive defensive tallies as a backcourt defender. Class A’s core group of setters remains strong.
Frame has long been among Class A’s elite at the libero position. She has averaged over 500 digs per season over the last two years, or about five digs per set over that time. The Cincinnati commit is now transitioning to the Papillion-La Vista lineup and will have an impactful one-off season with the Monarchs.
Kucks soared up the dig leaderboards as a sophomore and can make an even bigger impact with Millard North this fall. The converted outside hitter notched 5.3 digs per set in 2022–one of the highest marks among Class A defenders. That is game-changing production.
Galligan is carrying on the family tradition of defensive success in the Elkhorn South backcourt. She finished comfortably over 400 digs a season ago and will provide valuable veteran leadership for a young Storm roster.
