Here’s a look at some of the players that stood out:
West played a lot of kids on this night, which kept Lacy from being on the court for all rotations. Still, the senior shared the team lead with 14 kills, hitting an impressive .609. She paced the Trojans with 4.0 blocks, showing her ability as a two-way player. Lacy is capable of holding up in the back row even though she excels at the net. She’s an explosive athlete that can definitely help a program at the next level.
Jada Smith
Jada Smith
Smith led all performers with 17 kills in this match. She added six digs on the night, showing off her all-rotation game. She stands out the most hitting at the pin with good leaping ability and a heavy swing. She reads defensive alignments well and can adjust where she’ll hit while in the air. She added four service aces in this one.
I saw Austen this summer, again early in this prep season and then here. She keeps improving. She played a much more relaxed game Tuesday compared to a few weeks ago, at the start of her high school career. The freshman shared the team-lead with 14 kills against Waterloo West. She also contributed seven digs and 3.0 blocks, proving she can hurt opponents through all six rotations. She’s technically sound and a good athlete.
Highlights
Allyson Landers
Allyson Landers
Landers led all players with 39 assists in this match. She also chipped in with four kills, six digs and a block. At 5-10, she’s starting at a high point with her sets, and her long arms help her defend the net. She delivers the ball with accuracy and to where her teammates like to swing. She helps her hitters get into a rhythm.
Stammeyer is West’s leader, which often is the case with setters. She keeps teammates on task through good and bad while standing out with her own play. She showed off her versatility in this match with 24 assists, 10 kills, 17 digs and a block. The lefty swings well at the net and even can hit from middle back. Her sets are soft and on point. She defends in the back row and at the net.
Jones looked like a freshman at times but more often played like a veteran. She showed signs of being able to handle six rotations, which appeared in her stat line for this match. She contributed six kills, two assists, six digs, a block and an ace. The freshman displays a good feel for the game, developing skills and nice potential.
Elle Barnett
Elle Barnett
Not a starter for the Trojans, Barnett still impacts the match with her sound set of skills. In this contest, she posted 16 assists and eight digs. She sets well, which permits Stammeyer to play elsewhere. Barnett keeps West in system by getting to her spots on time then delivering sets capable of being killed on the regular.
