The high school volleyball season officially got underway two weeks ago. The journey to crowing state champions during early November in Coralville has begun in earnest.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>While teams will decide it on the court, predicting who they will be is a fun exercise, for me, and, hopefully, you. We love rankings!</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>I'll be ranking teams in the state's largest class, 5A, each Monday (or Tuesday) throughout the season. Here's how I see it one week into the new campaign:</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>1.</strong>&nbsp;<strong>Waukee Northwest</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Wolves haven't flinched since dropping an a Week 1 decision to Valley and now own an 8-1 mark. It includes a dominating 3-0 CIML sweep of a good Waukee squad last week. [player_tooltip player_id='490013' first='Logan' last='Vogt'], an Iowa State pledge, has gotten her senior season off to a fantastic start with 78 kills (.311) and 57 digs in 22 sets. Ankeny</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The Hawks remain at No. 2 after sweeping Southeast Polk in CIML action and the Mount Vernon Tournament last week. They won all 17 sets played, including wins against Liberty, Dike-New Hartford and Mount Vernon. Dowling Catholic</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Dowling Catholic holds steady at No. 3 after earning a hard-fought, five-set triumph against Ankeny Centennial in CIML action last week. The Maroons' lone loss this season was a 2-1 setback against Ankeny. Dallas Center-Grimes</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Dallas Center-Grimes (12-0) checks in fourth again. The Mustangs swept Pella in a Little Hawkeye Conference match and then went 6-0 in sets in winning the Marshalltown quad, which also included Solon and Waverly-Shell Rocks. Pleasant Valley</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>The fifth spot in the rankings is the most difficult one to pin down again this week. A case can be made for several teams in this tier. I'll stick with a PV team that was idle last week after picking up a wins against Iowa City West, Western Christian and Cedar Rapids Kennedy in Week 1. It lost to Ankeny, and by a 2-1 scores against Waukee and Cedar Falls.
