Action at the Windy City National Qualifier Easter weekend in Chicago was when I watched Austen perform in person for the first time since November’s state tournament. She led Iowa City West to state for the first time since 2016. I’ve watched Austen raise her level of play steadily during the last three years. She keeps getting stronger, more explosive and more consistent. Austen showed another gear while competing against top competition in the Open Division at Windy City. She mounted a powerful attack against big blocks, blasting through them and working off of them for points. Austen is seeing the court and reading the block better, taking advantage when there’s an opening down the line. She’s also improved her block and is reliable in the back row. Austen is a Power 4 recruit for a lot of reasons and has a chance to shine on the next level.

Sophia Austen is one of three Iowa State commits from Iowa who will be in action this weekend at the Northern Lights Qualifier. She is a six rotation outside hitter who preps at Iowa City West where she led her squad to a state tournament appearance this past fall. There is a maturity to her game where she knows how to make the smart shots, she’s efficient from the outside, can handle a high volume of serve receive, and can score points out of the backrow. This is a team who has their eyes on the prize of getting an open bid and will look to do so this weekend.
