Continue ReadingThis is the first year of Madness in Miltown and we had a great turnout. There were teams from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and Illinois. We wanted to highlight some special players that stood out during the weekend. Here’s to the attackers who relentlessly pursued the point no matter the opponent’s size.
Foor is a 6 rotation outside hitter that is so smooth with everything she does. She makes a great first contact in serve receive and contributes a huge rip out of the middle back. Foor makes smart reads on defense and puts herself in a great position to get the dig. I really like her ability to use the opposing block for the point or use a sharp cut inside the block. Foor knew how to use a number of tools and finding the deep cross corner was one of them. She knows how to serve the deep seam and create confusion for opposing passers.
Highlights
Dempsey did not hesitate to drop her elbow at the last second and make an offspeed shot for the point. She does a great job squashing overpasses without hesitation. Dempsey is quick and reads well in serve receive.
Nottestad is no stranger to the pass to attack route. She does a nice job of taking care of the first contact as well as using high hands to score. When she is in a good position she has a really heavy swing on the ball.
Highlights
Urban is an intimidating presence at the net but I love seeing how much fun she has just playing the game. She does a great job adjusting to swing on the right side and even working the ball down the line. Urban has a great thumb down finish to work off the opposing block’s hands. She puts up a block that gets in the face of the opposing attackers and gets them flustered when they can’t work around her. Urban has a heavy swing that is really hard to slow down.
Highlights
Whether she is behind the serve line, at the net, or anywhere in between Altendorf is a high level threat. She makes teams scramble in serve receive to give her team a good run of points. Altendorf is also a great first contact that keeps her team in system. From the backrow she takes an out of system ball and puts in a deep corner for the point. She will also take swings out of the middle in serve receive and score at will.
This was my first time getting to see Newman play in person. I’ve seen highlights and watch some online matches but in person I really liked seeing the versatility. She wasn’t afraid to tweak her approach on the right side and make it a modified slide approach to get the slicing action without eliminating her ability to take a swing down the line. She routinely hits the ball off high hands or powers it through the block without any issue.
Highlights
She not only made a big announcement recently that she had committed to Viterbo but she also has a cannon for an arm. When she swings her team pays attentuion. Put her next to any of the middles a a big block will be going up. Ihle has a high contact point and fast swing on the ball with a great slice to it.
