My coverage of the Prep Dig Preview in San Marcos, California on Friday night was mainly centered on the oldest and youngest classes at the event. I could not help but notice some really great athletes that were setting from the sophomore class as well. Let me tell you about some of the awesome things I beheld at the Prep Dig Preview from the setters in the sophomore class.

[player_tooltip player_id='500289' first='Danica' last='Bernal']

Bernal is a 5'5" setter from Chaminade High School. Bernal will probably climb our rankings after her next high school season. She has all the things that good setters have. She has speed, she has a great platform, and she is always moving around the court and running her offense in the smartest way possible. She has a high volleyball IQ and displays great parity with her sets. She can dig, serve, and dump when appropriate all while planning out her team's next moves. I cannot wait to see the developments she has after this next season of high school ball.

[player_tooltip player_id='482030' first='Leighton' last='Devereux']

Devereux is a 5'11" setter from Marymount High School. Devereux has a long reach so if you are planning to hit on her side of the court, be sure she is not looking or something. She will block you without giving it a second thought. She has soft hands, a great platform, and is really smart when she dumps the ball over to the hole in the middle of her opponent's court. She will also move the ball around to different hitters sharing the spotlight and making her hitters look good.

[player_tooltip player_id='482029' first='Kaya' last='Richards']

Richards is a 5'10" setter from Venice High School. Richards looks like a hitter when she hits. I know that sounds repetitive but she is a setter who looks like a hitter. She is long and lean and has a great vertical. It looks really easy for her to jump up above the net and slam a ball to the ground for a kill. She has soft hands too and can move the ball around like it is nothing. It looks really easy when she plays, even though we all know it is not. She is great at whatever position she is playing on the court. She has a great athlete IQ meaning she is super smart and competitive while playing and it is hard to beat her at the net or playing defense or when she is setting her hitters. She is going to make her opponent's work and that is a high compliment.

[player_tooltip player_id='480785' first='Melina' last='Servino']

Servino is a 5'5" setter from Torrance High School. Servino is a lot of dynamo in a smaller package. She has a great vertical, fast feet, and an eye for the tools available to her on her court. She has a high volleyball IQ and uses it to her advantage during scrimmages. She gets to know her hitters so she can give them the types of sets they prefer to use for a kill. She was very effective at driving her offense during scrimmages at the preview and appeared to be good at communication.

[player_tooltip player_id='542285' first='Haley' last='Thatcher']

Thatcher is a 5'6" setter from Classical Academy. Thatcher is super athletic and has a great vertical when showing skills at the net. She is a great defensive player and an awesome setter. She moves quickly around the court giving her team the best advantage when setting her multiple hitters. She is an awesome server and played a great defensive specialist during scrimmage.
