The defending Class 6A State Champion Mill Valley Jaguars won a lopsided three-set dual over the Shawnee Mission North Bison on September 10.

Several Mill Valley prospects gobbled up stats like Cookie Monster crushes crumbs. With the win, the Jaguars improved their record to 3-1 to open the season. Mill Valley will head southwest on September 12 to face the Maize Eagles and Andover Central Jaguars.

Here are five prospects I was impressed by in the Sunflower League contest.

[player_tooltip player_id='154038' first='Ella' last='Florez'], 5'9”, S, Mill Valley, ‘26

Florez is ranked No. 2 overall and has verbally committed to Iowa State University. She plays a clean mistake-free game. Florez makes everything look easy, even in a match with such a slow pace to it. She played the setter position during the first and third sets and took some swings as a hitter in the second. She racked up 20 assists, three kills, one dig, one block, and two aces. The Cyclones are getting an athletic court general for the future.

[player_tooltip player_id='489339' first='Corinne' last='Schwindt'], 5'8”, DS/L, Mill Valley, ‘26

Schwindt is currently ranked No. 94 overall. Schwindt saw action during all three sets and I can see why she wears the libero jersey for Mill Valley. She came up with a couple of all-star digs but wasn't challenged very often during the match. I liked her serve which she accurately kept in play. She finished the match with a team-high six digs and four serve receptions.

[player_tooltip player_id='436201' first='Riley' last='Riggs'], 6'0”, OH, Mill Valley, ‘27

Prep Dig has Riggs ranked No. 3 overall in the Kansas Class of 2027 and she had the kind of match that puts her into consideration to move into the top slot. She was all over the court, although she did not play a ton in the third and final set. She worked with two different setters which was fun to watch. She did clip the top of the net a couple of attacks when her timing was slightly off. She finished with five kills, eight serve receptions, one block, and six aces.

[player_tooltip player_id='512867' first='Amaya' last='Thi'], 5'5”, S/OH, Shawne Mission North, ‘27

I first saw Thi at the Prep Dig Showcase in August. She is ranked No. 108 overall by Prep Dig. She had the most advanced skills on the Bison squad. She played setter for North but often hits for her club team. She finished with just two assists on a night when the Bison completed few attacks and scored just 22 points in three sets. She did set the ball consistently and finished with three digs, one block, and an ace.

[player_tooltip player_id='629164' first='Talia' last='Humfeld'], 5'2”, DS/L, Shawne Mission North, ‘27

Humfeld is an unranked libero I saw play for the first time. She got balls hammered at her all night long but hung in like a real trooper. She finished with 13 serve receptions and three digs. She has a nice platform and is still raw. What I admired most about her was she didn't show frustration during the match and kept grinding against the defending state champions. She is the kind of leader a program can build around.
