Sometimes a freshman will crash the scene and fly high. More often, student-athletes' contributions increase over time. Breakouts happen every year through every grade.

I watched Ellison and the Hawks take out Iowa City High in a regional final and again at the state tournament last November. She played a key role for a squad with a lot of firepower, much of it graduating after the season. It opens up a path for Ellison to build on her 121 kills and 49.0 blocks as a sophomore. Her abilities also make it likely. Versatility is a key trait, as we see in her highlights from the regional final. Ellison produces kills from the right side, outside and middle on the first three clips of the video. She's an explosive athlete that jumps quickly and finishes the attack with power in her swing. With two seasons left of high school, Ellison has a great chance to earn all-state honors.

A case could be made that Taylor already broke out as a sophomore in 2024. She came up with a team-high 354 digs for the Class 5A state runners-up. That said, she didn't land on the coaches all-state or all-district teams, which should serve as motivation this coming fall. It's a safe bet that she'll be recognized. Taylor is fantastic. She combines the required gifts, like quick feet and reflexes, to shine in the back row with a real good feel for the game's flow. Taylor makes the game look easy, which we all know it's not. The Wolves are the favorites to win it all, and she's one of the main reasons why.

Jondle's 325 kills (.261) and 260 digs were the most among Norsemen last season. The sophomore also posted 27.0 blocks. Jondle has carried that momentum into club, where she's key player for RVA. Athleticism is her calling card. She ran in the state track meet as a freshman and also stands out in softball. The explosiveness shines through on the court, where Jondle brings a big swing and sound overall volleyball skills. She earned fourth-team all-state honors last year and should rise up the pecking order as a junior.

It will be interesting to see what type of attention Snoozy receives from college volleyball coaches beginning on June 15 because the basketball coaches already have jumped in with her. She reports scholarships on the hardwood from Iowa State, Creighton, Drake and others at this point. Snoozy shined during Heelan's run to the volleyball state championship last November. The Crusaders won all nine sets they played in Coralville. They received 195 kills (.260) and 68.0 blocks from Snoozy, who made life miserable for opponents in the middle of the net. She jumps well, has long arms and good timing on the block. Snoozy provides power with her swing.

Western Christian made it back to the state championship match last season despite graduating a lot of production from its 2023 title team. Kooima represented a big reason why the drop-off was slight. She came up with a 241 digs as a sophomore. If there were nerves, they didn't show in Coralville, where she produced 17 digs, including eight in the semifinal-round win against West Delaware. Kooima tracks plays well and moves herself into proper position more often than not. Once there, she utilizes quick reflexes and lateral quickness to produce pretty passes. Expect a big step forward for Kooima in 2025.

Programs like Ankeny seem to have an endless supply of talent coming through the program. One group graduates, and the next one steps in. The Hawks said goodbye to plenty of production from their 2024 state tournament and will need contributions from student-athletes like Moyer. She's looked capable of doing that during this club campaign with RVA. Moyer is comfortable and effective hitting outside, but her play at the opposite pin is intriguing. She explodes off of the court, leaps well, has hang time and finishes with a powerful swing. Moyer also shows potential with the block.
