CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Westside Invitational on Oct. 11 at Jefferson High allowed for the scouting of top teams across multiple classifications. One of them was defending 5A state champion Pleasant Valley, which fell to Centennial in the event's championship match.

Even with that setback, the Spartans showed a lot of growth from the last time I scouted them in person at Prep Dig's Sizzle in early August. That development should get them back to state, where they have a puncher's chance at taking down heavily-favored Waukee Northwest.

Scouting Kremer during the Westside Invitational on Oct. 11 in Cedar Rapids proved similar to the other times watching her throughout the years. The Drake commitment dominated the action and continued showing growth in her game. That hasn't happened by accident. Kremer has worked hard to take advantage of her natural gifts. The senior now impacts matches consistently through six rotations but no contribution is greater than her hammering away at the pin. She achieves excellent height in her vertical leap and generates uncommon power with her swing. Kremer has improved in reading the defense to better locate soft spots in it and also avoid the block. She's also improved her defense at the net and can hold her own in the back row. The Bulldogs are getting a good one in Kremer.

I think I'll write a piece about selfless players in Iowa after this season. Sweers is the inspiration for it. The PV junior switched from an all-state level, six-rotation standout to setter this year to fill a need for the defending Class 5A state champions. The seamless transition speaks volumes about her volleyball talents and winning mentality. Watching Sweers run the Spartan offense at the Oct. 11, 2025 Westside Invite in Cedar Rapids, one would be unable to tell it's her first year at the position. She piled up 640 assists through the team's first 82 sets by putting the ball on the money and, more often than not, finding the right attacker to feed. Sweers can do it all at setter because she's a natural hitter, and defends at the net and in the back row. Whatever college gets this kid will be adding a gamer and winner to its roster.

Schmidt's game really took a leap forward during the last club season. After playing an important role in helping Pleasant Valley win the Class 5A state championship as a junior in 2024, she showed a hammer from the outside given more responsibility with Iowa Select. Schmidt has since committed to Central Connecticut State University and moved into a starring role with a Spartan team in a quest to repeat. Through 82 sets this campaign, Schmidt has accounted for 161 kills (.194) with 91 digs and 27.0 blocks, ranking among the team leaders in all those categories. She's expanded her game in becoming more effective hitting from the opposite pin and sharpening her overall volleyball skills. It feels like Schmidt also has plenty of room to grow before reaching her potential, as well, giving Central Connecticut plenty to be excited about.

I'll likely write a postseason piece on the most improved players from around the state. Count on Yeggy being included. The first-year varsity starter was playing a key role for the defending state champion Spartans when I watched them at the Westside Invitational in Cedar Rapids on Oct. 11, 2025. The bouncy middle showed potential during the club campaign, at the LOVB event earlier this summer and again at August's Prep Dig Sizzle. She's realized a lot more of it since then. The junior is a bit undersized at times but benefits from being bouncy and very skilled. She also takes advantage of her long arms in being an imposing two-way presence in the middle of the net. Yeggy's timing and positioning make her an effective blocker. She's developed a lot as a hitter this year and is becoming more consistent in that area. Through 82 sets, Yeggy ranked second on PV in kills (169, .339) and her 64.0 blocks were more than twice as much as her nearest teammates.

Ouellette is one of the more under-appreciated players in the state. Often overshadowed by higher-ranked prospects on her teams, rest assured, those squads wouldn't be nearly as successful without her. Ouellette is one of those kids that fills whatever roles are needed for success. She's probably best hitting on the outside with explosion off of the court and a mighty swing. She's improved in reading defenses and finding soft spots to end points. Ouellette also has sharpened her defense at the net and in the back row, where she had 119 digs in the first 81 sets of 2025. With ability to also take care of business at the opposite pin, Ouellette is one of Iowa's most complete players and a recruit Bradley should be happy to have.

Allaman performed a key role as a sophomore defensive specialist on last year's state championship team. As a junior this fall, she's worn the jersey and helped the Spartans maintain strong play in the back row. Through the team's first 82 sets, the 11th-grader accounted for a team-best 221 digs. She ranked second on the squad with 57 assists, showing an ability to set the offense when working with the two ball. Allaman communicates well and helps direct traffic before and after the ball is put in play. With the amount of progress she's made in the last year and an important club campaign on the horizon, Allaman has a chance to grow her recruitment.
