In case you missed it, we put some state title contenders in the spotlight for yesterday's feature. We've seen some exceptional 2027s step up for Nebraska's elite squads, but that's not the only group that has captured our attention. Tournament-caliber teams have some younger stars, too.

This one is all about the underclassmen. Becoming a high-impact freshman or sophomore on an elite team can be daunting, but these upstarts have not shied away from big moments. Perhaps a few more triumphs await in Lincoln.

Milford's stat sheet is full of exceptional underclassmen. The Eagles set a high bar with their semifinal appearance last year, but Muller and her team look poised to take the next step in Class C1. Muller has soared past her 2024 scoring average this fall, putting down 2.4 kills per set on a scorching 0.307 clip. This versatile pin hitter can do her damage on either pin, particularly in a Milford offense that often blurs distinctions between positions. Muller's right-side prowess has been highlighted in recent Eagle matches, and this small-town star is likely steamrolling toward another trip to Lincoln next month.

Marotz put up colossal numbers in her freshman season with Winside High School, and her influence hasn't wavered with a new squad this fall. The all-around attacker joined Stanton for the 2025 campaign and has helped catalyze an 18-6 mark for the Mustangs. Like many of the young terminators on this feature, Marotz can operate in several different spots along the net in first-ball situations. Her unique approach on the right side is impossible for opposing blockers to track. However, Marotz also thrives on slow '2' tempo balls in front of the setter. Her diverse route tree has transformed Stanton's frontcourt this year as the Mustangs gain ground in the Class C2 race.

Elkhorn North's front row is set for the present and future. Palmer represents the next wave of leaders for the Wolves and has eclipsed 200 kills in Year 2 with the program. She's a prolific slide hitter who thrives in Elkhorn North's M1 spot--a prominent role to carry with one of Class B's best teams. Of course, this positional designation has also allowed Palmer to wield her wicked serve and play a little defense along the end line, too. The late-season stretch will offer no shortage of opportunities for Palmer to hone her craft against tough competition.

Lincoln North Star has officially joined Class A's elite. It's easy to focus solely on the stacked cast of Navigator attackers, but don't forget about Paneitz's indispensable contributions along the end line. She commands the serve-receive pattern for North Star, putting consistent, predictable balls on top of the setter's head. Paneitz can also translate that precision to her transition digs and keep the Navigator offense flowing in long rallies. This group has proven that 2024's tournament breakthrough was no fluke.

Let's finish with a couple of can't-miss freshmen. Ickes has helped set the tone for O'Neill St. Mary's, a Class D2 contender boasting an 18-5 record heading into mid-October. The Cardinals are no strangers to the tournament stage, but veterans have usually been the ones to dominate the box score. However, Ickes has shone in her debut season with 3.4 kills per set on a team-leading 0.291 percentage. St. Mary's has a go-to left-side hitter in every rotation across the dial, which is often a precursor to postseason prosperity.

Perhaps you've seen this name before. O'Connell was our Avoli Committed Athlete honoree at July's Prep Dig Freshman Showcase, where her effortless elevation and vocal leadership immediately stood out. She built off a tremendous club campaign in which Premier Nebraska 14 Gold reached the GJNC podium. Now, O'Connell is putting down 2.6 kills per set in a season that has brought Omaha Marian back into the Class A championship discussion. The Crusaders have leveraged a veteran-laden lineup this fall, but the cast wouldn't be complete without a little freshman flair from O'Connell.
