Speaking of showcase standouts, this is a good opportunity to check in with our Avoli Committed Athlete from July’s Nebraska Freshman Showcase. O’Connell’s sky-high contact point and heavy arm stole the spotlight at the event, setting the stage for a big debut season with Omaha Marian. The Crusaders leaned on their first-year pin hitter to the tune of 275 kills and almost 200 total digs. O’Connell brought an influx of termination and ball control that thrust Marian back into the tournament after 2024’s hiatus. She should lead the charge again with Premier Nebraska 15 Gold.

This summer’s Nebraska Freshman Showcase introduced us to some athletes who are already thriving at Nebraska’s highest level. O’Connell earned a major accolade as our Avoli Committed Athlete from the event, but that was just the start of O’Connell’s ascent. She joined the Omaha Marian lineup and helped the team to the tournament with her electric pin attacking. A double-digit kill performance against Omaha Westside has continued the positive trend heading into 2026.

Perhaps you’ve seen this name before. O’Connell was our Avoli Committed Athlete honoree at July’s Prep Dig Freshman Showcase, where her effortless elevation and vocal leadership immediately stood out. She built off a tremendous club campaign in which Premier Nebraska 14 Gold reached the GJNC podium. Now, O’Connell is putting down 2.6 kills per set in a season that has brought Omaha Marian back into the Class A championship discussion. The Crusaders have leveraged a veteran-laden lineup this fall, but the cast wouldn’t be complete without a little freshman flair from O’Connell.

Of course, we had to include our Avoli Committed Athlete. O’Connell took the Freshman Showcase by storm with her sky-high elevation and tremendous attacking range. The future Omaha Marian freshman brought leadership skills to match her athleticism, so the Crusaders are getting a good one in their upcoming class. O’Connell has earned a head start on collecting accolades.
