This writeup is not meant to call the rest of you selfish. Sometimes one must be presented with an opportunity for unselfishness before becoming virtuous.

The following student-athletes did just that in helping their teams, sometimes in unexpected ways. They sacrificed for the betterment of the program.

[player_tooltip player_id='490015' first='Mazie' last='Sweers'], JR, S/OH, Pleasant Valley

Truth be told, Sweers is the inspiration for the All-Unselfish Team. After establishing herself as one of the state's most consistent six-rotation outside hitters, Sweers helped the Spartans back to the state tournament by switching to setter. Not only did she look natural playing the new position, Sweers ranked fourth among competitors in Class 5A with 788 assists in 2025. She also contributed 77 kills, 210 digs and 30.0 blocks.

[player_tooltip player_id='389060' first='Tatem' last='Schmidt'], SR, S/RS, Ankeny Centennial

One of two setters in Centennial's impactful 6-2 system that led it to the Class 5A title match, Schmidt checked her ego at the door. Committed to Southwest Missouri State as a setter, she rotated off of the spot and found success hitting at the opposite pin. Schmidt paced the Jaguars with 266 kills (.263), and added 381 assists, 223 digs and 62.0 blocks in producing one of the state's top overall statistical lines. Schmidt told me she welcomed sharing the setter position because of who she was sharing it with, someone you can read about next.

[player_tooltip player_id='261083' first='Maegan' last='Cheeseman'], SR, S/RS, Ankeny Centennial

Cheeseman and [player_tooltip player_id='389060' first='Tatem' last='Schmidt'] formed a 1-2 punch in the state's top 6-2 this season. The Sioux Falls setter pledge moved aside for her classmate and dear friend for the good of the whole. Cheeseman led the squad with 592 assists, chipping in 138 kills on dumps into the donut and an impressive swing on the right side. She also came up with 287 digs and 57.0 blocks. It's difficult imagining the system working much better at this level, and Cheeseman and Schmidt's willingness to share was the main reason why it did.

[player_tooltip player_id='545971' first='Avery' last='Cordes'], SO, MH/RS/OH, Waukee Northwest

It feels like a write a lot about Cordes. That's probably because her volleyball talents deserve the attention. She stood out as a freshman last season hitting at the opposite pin for a squad that reached the 5A state championship match. The same role awaited her on the state's top 15U squad this past club season. Fast forward to this fall, and there was a need in the middle of the net. In steps Cordes to deliver there with 185 kills (.316) and a team-best 92.0 blocks for the state champs. She even kicked in 67 digs. We shouldn't be too surprised by that performance, as Cordes would shine at any spot in the front row.

[player_tooltip player_id='730426' first='Hazel' last='Schluckebier'], SO, S/RS, Iowa City High

If you're sensing a pattern here, it's my affinity for setters that can swing from the right side and block while still maintaining high-level distribution, communication and leadership skills. The Little Hawks needed more power at the pin, and Schluckebier sacrificed setting time to provide it. The lefty increased her explosion off of the court and hang time, generating more velocity on the follow-through. She still recored 476 assists in just 71 sets with 79 kills, 207 digs and 19.0 blocks.

[player_tooltip player_id='490011' first='Leah' last='Janulewicz'], JR, OH/DS/L, Waukee Northwest

With a roster as deep and talented as the one Northwest boasts, sacrifices must be made to provide reps for everyone. We talked earlier in this piece about [player_tooltip player_id='545971' first='Avery' last='Cordes'], and [player_tooltip player_id='490011' first='Leah' last='Janulewicz'] is right there with her in terms of unselfishness. She found herself sharing defensive specialist and libero responsibilities during the last few years of school ball and club. Janulewicz is good back there. To make herself and her teams better, however, she developed her swing and defense at the pin. We saw signs of that working out last year, but Janulewicz's play took off during this season's title run. The Drake commitment pounded out 223 kills with an efficient .337 hitting percentage. Her 273 digs were the second most on the team, and she came up with 34.0 blocks. Janulewicz is a great example of being proactive as a teammate to make the team better.

[player_tooltip player_id='730419' first='Hailey' last='Wiederin'], SO, OH/RS, Ankeny

When I saw Ankeny at the Live Like Line Tournament at Iowa City West early in the season, Wiederin was getting the job done at the opposite pin. That's probably an understatement. She was excelling. Wiederin still was contributing as a two-way player there during the Hawks' run to the state semifinals, while also taking swings on the outside, where she impressed me during the club season. It showed her willingness and buy-in as a young player fitting in on an Ankeny squad stocked with pins. With her length and athleticism, Wiederin could also work in the middle of the net. The sophomore's flexibility should not be a knock on her overall potential, which is considerable.

[player_tooltip player_id='489998' first='Belle' last='Seaman'], JR, S/OH, Muscatine

Back to the affinity for setters that expand their games, Seaman is one of the state's best at the position. She knew the Muskies needed much more than delivering opportunities for teammates, however. The attack required her swing. Seaman slid off of her natural spot to rack up a squad-best 283 kills to go with 198 assists, 192 digs and 18.0 blocks in 88 sets. The numbers speak to Seaman's athleticism benefitting her at setter, which was clearly apparent in club action last year, when she ran the show for a regional champion. She's a winner that, unsurprisingly, chipped in wherever she could in school ball during 2025.
