Even the state tournament brings its share of surprises.

Every November, Pinnacle Bank Arena is a convergence point for many of Nebraska's most recognizable prep stars. Top-tier teams and athletes face off after generating countless accolades during the regular season. However, it's also a place for the state's rural gems to emerge--even ones we didn't see coming.

This year's tournament offered another reminder of how many more small-town standouts we can add to our radar. Here are a few who capitalized under the bright lights of fall ball.

We highlighted Pruter as an instant standout in the quarterfinal round, so she clearly made a lasting impression during her time in Lincoln. The junior outside hitter provided a perfect complement to senior star [player_tooltip player_id='219728' first='Sydney' last='Hengelfelt'] on the pin, producing 17 kills and three blocks against top-seeded Amherst. She proved herself against an eventual champion and should become the new go-to for the Cougars in 2026.

Weber might have been an unsung hero of Johnson County Central's undefeated regular season, and her stay in Lincoln helped reinforce that idea. She made the most of her in-system opportunties and demonstrated her hustle during a long, arduous quarterfinal contest against Yutan. Weber anchors the middle with her tremendous defensive instincts and quick pin-to-pin movement along the net. Look for her to uphold the high bar JCC set in 2025.

The Class of 2027 has changed the game for Laurel-Concord-Coleridge. Brown stepped into this year's lineup and was a crucial contributor to the Bears' runner-up effort in Class C2. She has wielded a terminal arm in the frontcourt, but Brown can also participate in defensive slugfests like the one we saw in the championship match. Her team-high 19 digs against Freeman emodies the spirit of LCC's tough, gritty personality in the 2025 campaign.

Veteran players were a focal point of top-seeded Ogallala's physical lineup, but we can't forget about the high-flying sophomore in the middle. Rasby's long frame presents nightmare matchups for opposing blockers. Moreover, this versatile attacker can swing on the pins to give Ogallala some extra firepower in first-ball situations. We're eager to see how Rasby's positional designation evolves as she takes on a bigger role next fall.

We're going on a run of sophomore difference-makers. 2025 was a breakout year for Kriewald, who averaged nearly two kills per set for Central Valley. The Cougars followed up on last year's tournament appearance, but Year 2 brought Kriewald's most extensive on-court action. She racked up seven kills and 15 digs as Central Valley went back and forth with Shelton, the defending Class D2 champs. This explosive sophomore is due for another surge as she becomes an upperclassman.

The next wave of Overton stars is on the way. McCarter can play any position across the net for the Eagles and has exhibited rare versatilty for a first-year prep player. She hit 0.500 during Overton's four-set classic against Bartley Southwest and tallied some clutch touches against Roughrider terminators. The Eagles keep defying the odds with their ongoing tournament streak, and McCarter will keep them in the hunt despite notable outgoing seniors.

This sophomore left-side attacker put out a double-double effort with ten kills and 17 digs against Freeman, the eventual Class C2 champs.
