AZNQ: 14s Recap and Standouts

It's crazy to think we're already at this point in the club season — time is flying, and the intensity is only picking up. This past weekend, the Class of 2030 showed up in a big way, battling it out for four coveted state bids with urgency, grit, and a whole lot to prove.   With two teams — Livewire 14 Prime and Omni 14N1 — already holding bids and still in the mix, the pressure was on for the remaining 40 teams hungry for their shot. Every match carried weight, every point mattered, and this group rose to the moment. The future of Arizona volleyball was on full display, and if this weekend was any indication, this class is just getting started.   <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Team Who Rose to the Top </h2>   <h4 class="wp-block-heading">AZ Sky 14 Gold</h4>   We watched AZ Sky come together in a big way and remind everyone exactly why they entered the tournament ranked #1. They dominated Day 1, cruising through without dropping a single set.   Day 2 brought a higher level of competition, with teams pushing them more in pool play, but AZ Sky stayed composed and steady, earning their spot in the Gold bracket. From there, they handled business against Atomic in the first round and set up a highly anticipated finals matchup with Rev.   And it delivered — this was easily the match of the day. They came out on top in a 3 set battle, but we saw this team dig deep and prove why they're a front runner and earned themselves a national bid.   <h4 class="wp-block-heading">Rev 14 Premier </h4>   This team was an absolute thrill to watch all weekend long. What stood out most was their composure — no matter the moment, they stayed calm, disciplined, and continued to fight through every point of the NQ.   Coming in ranked #2, they handled Day 1 with authority, not dropping a single set. They carried that same grit into Day 2, once again sweeping through pool play without giving up a set. In the Gold Bracket, EVJ 14 Elite tested them early, but they remained in control and executed when it mattered most.   The finals told the full story of who this group is. They pushed AZ Sky to three sets, battling all the way to a 10–15 finish in a match that could have gone either way.   From start to finish, this team competed with poise, toughness, and belief — a well-earned bid ticket punched to nationals for a very talented squad.   <h4 class="wp-block-heading">EVJ 14 Elite</h4>   Coming in ranked #3, EVJ showed resilience right from the start. Day 1 didn't come without challenges, as they were pushed in a few tight sets, but they never backed down — finding ways to finish and holding steady when it mattered most.   Day 2 was no easier. With a tough draw ahead, they faced #6 Omni — a team already holding a bid — and delivered one of the biggest wins of the tournament. EVJ battled to a three-set victory, punching their ticket to nationals and advancing to the semifinals. From there, it became about positioning and which bid they would take home.   In the semifinals, they matched up with a strong Rev 14 Premier squad. While Rev took it in two, EVJ competed hard and stayed in the fight. They bounced back in a big way, securing a solid win over Atomic to close out the weekend.   A gritty, hard-fought performance from start to finish earns EVJ a well-deserved American bid.   <h4 class="wp-block-heading">Atomic 14 Smack Premier</h4>   Atomic entered the qualifier ranked #4 and wasted no time proving they belonged. They handled Day 1 with confidence, taking both opponents in straight sets and showing no signs of slowing down.   Day 2 brought more pressure, and Victorium tested them with two tight sets, but Atomic's defense held firm when it mattered most. Against Armor Elite, they battled through a nail-biting first set before turning it up in the second, securing their spot in the Gold bracket — and more importantly, punching their ticket to nationals.   In bracket play, they ran into tough matchups against AZ Sky 14 Gold and EVJ 14 Elite, both of whom pushed them out, but Atomic never lost their edge. They stayed composed, competed through every moment, and finished the weekend strong.   A resilient performance earns them the AZ Freedom Bid — a well-deserved result for a team that battled from start to finish.   <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Teams Who Left Their Mark</h2>   Club One 14 Titanium - Coming in ranked #15, this group made a loud statement and firmly positioned themselves for a potential trickle-down bid. They turned heads on Day 1 with a big-time upset over Aspire 14 Alpha in pool play, immediately putting themselves in the mix as a true contender. Day 2 tested them even more, landing in a tough pool with AZ Storm 14 Lightning and AZ Sky 14 Gold — but they didn't back down. They battled in every set and came away with a huge three-set win over Lightning in a thriller. This is a team that competes with heart, grit, and belief. They proved they belong in the conversation and look more than deserving of a bid. It was inspiring to watch them fight, and if they continue on this trajectory, a bid could easily be in their future.   Zona 14 Black - Coming in ranked #16 and finishing 9th is a huge statement for this group. They set the tone on Day 1 in a Tucson rivalry matchup, where Zona pulled off an upset over Club Cactus 14 Mizuno to claim that #9 position. Day 2 brought even tougher competition in power pools, and they didn't shy away from the moment. They pushed Livewire in a three-set thriller, showing they can hang with top-tier teams and compete point for point. They ultimately landed in the Bronze bracket and took care of business, winning the division and closing out the weekend on a high note. This is a team trending in the right direction — and one we'll definitely be seeing more of as the season continues.   <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Standouts Who Made a Statement</h2>   [player_tooltip player_id='935378' first='Maree' last='Poortinga'] (AZ Sky 14 Gold) - We saw Maree Portinga compete with relentless passion and grit, especially in the finals against Rev. Her fire was undeniable and lifted her team in big moments. What continues to stand out is her ability to produce as an undersized outside — finding ways to score, outwork defenders, and make a consistent impact no matter the situation.   [player_tooltip player_id='952643' first='Tenley' last='Sheets'] (AZ Sky 14 Gold) -Tenley delivered in the biggest moments, coming up with clutch kills that kept her team in control. Her swing carried serious power, and what stood out most was her consistency — even in tight, high-pressure situations, she never backed down and continued to produce.   [player_tooltip player_id='915628' first='Charlize' last='Braddock'] (Rev 14 Premier) - Charlize showcased elite precision and ball placement, consistently putting her hitters in the best position to succeed. Her ability to jump set and control the tempo of the offense is well beyond her years, running the floor with confidence, poise, and a high volleyball IQ.   [player_tooltip player_id='957408' first='Natalija' last='Gluscevic'] (Rev 14 Premier) - She was a strong presence at the net, putting up a disciplined, effective block and staying consistently available as an offensive option. Her movement along the net was fluid, and her transitions were intentional, allowing her to stay one step ahead and make a steady impact on both sides of the ball. She consistently kept her team in system, even against the toughest swings, showing great reads, control, and composure under pressure.   [player_tooltip player_id='957386' first='Alaya' last='Kelley'] (EVJ 14 Elite) - She took confident, high-impact swings on the pin and elevated her play when it mattered most. In tight moments, she stepped up without hesitation — embracing the pressure and finding ways to score.   [player_tooltip player_id='942603' first='Jesenia' last='Vargas'] (Atomic 14 Smack Premier) - She has that natural touch you can't teach — the kind of hands that separate great setters from the rest. Her ball delivery is consistently clean and precise, putting hitters in rhythm every time. On top of that, she brings an aggressive defensive presence and leads with confidence, making her a true floor general for her team. Her serve receive was steady and reliable, and she served as a true anchor for her team — bringing consistency, control, and confidence to every rally.   [player_tooltip player_id='957424' first='Brooklyn' last='Anderson'] (Club One 14 Titanium) -She brings a calm yet inspiring presence to the court that steadies her team in every moment. She made a strong impact in serve receive and on defense, and paired it with smart, controlled swings that consistently put her team in a position to succeed.   [player_tooltip player_id='920114' first='Scarlett' last='Halverson'] (Omni 14N1) - She was a strong presence at the net this weekend, putting up an effective, disciplined block for her team. Offensively, she swung with purpose, and her off-blocker defense showed great awareness and intent, consistently putting herself in position to make plays.   [player_tooltip player_id='920118' first='Emmalyne' last='Glasser'] (Livewire 14 Prime) - She brings a heavy arm swing and knows exactly when to unleash it, making her a consistent scoring threat. As a dominant right side, she establishes a big, physical block, and pairs it with solid defense and strong ball control to impact the game in multiple ways.   [player_tooltip player_id='957455' first='Sydney' last='Adger'] (Club Cactus 14 Mizuno)- She made excellent decisions under pressure and commanded the offense with confidence. Her ability to stay composed in big moments and distribute effectively allowed her team to operate at a high level.   [player_tooltip player_id='957654' first='Kolbie' last='Jackson'] (Zona 14 Black) - She was a force at the net, putting up a strong, disciplined block, and did an excellent job running the offense. Her defensive quickness stood out, and she showed a clear command of the floor with her ability to lead and organize her team.   [player_tooltip player_id='936613' first='Makenna' last='Ramsey'] (Armor 14 Elite) - She showed incredible control on her attacks and was a major presence out of the middle.
