Not all bid-earning journeys are created equal.

Premier Nebraska 15 Gold entered last weekend's Mideast Qualifier with high aspirations in the 15 Open division. We normally start covering teams at the 15s age group, but it's hard to ignore what this group accomplished on last year's 14s circuit. 2025's 14 Gold squad earned a 14 National bid and climbed to the Dallas podium behind a 9-1 record. That postseason surge laid the foundation for Open success at the 15s level, and the first big qualifier test awaited in St. Louis.

But, even after periods of outright dominance at last weekend's event, Premier Nebraska had to scratch and claw for its ultimate prize. USAV qualifiers have a way of ramping up the pressure and injecting a little extra drama for Championship Sunday. 15 Gold's MEQ journey demonstrated this well.

Our latest addition to the Nebraska Bid Tracker cashed in on a grueling, roundabout path to a 15 Open berth.

Mayhem in the Margins

Before we delve into the tiebreaker chaos that precipitated Premier Nebraska's Open triumph, we have to address 15 Gold's blazing start.

The Great Plains challengers immediately established themselves as a 15 Open contender by opening with a perfect run through pool play. This 6-0 mark was highlighted by a streak of four consecutive sweeps, soaring past national powerhouses like Colorado Juniors and NKYVC. Last month's Triple Crown NIT proved how quickly 15 Gold can catch fire and gain momentum, so this early surge was no surprise.

Still, Premier Nebraska was wary of the challenges ahead for Sunday's all-important Gold pools. 15 Gold was paired with Circle City and AVC, and the trio gave us a round-robin carousel for the ages.

Starting a three-team pool slate with a 'W' is paramount, and 15 Gold answered the call. Despite absorbing a first-set gut punch against Circle City, Premier Nebraska rallied to win in three sets and begin Round 3 in the win column.

However, AVC CLE stepped to the plate and won a three-set nailbiter to hand 15 Gold its first loss of the weekend. The picture was muddied further as Circle City took down AVC in straight sets. We had the classic three-way tie scenario, and set victories told the story.

Circle City secured its first-place pool finish based on set win percentage. 15 Gold was relegated to second and narrowly missed out on the final quarterfinal bracket. But the bid quest wasn't over.

MEQ's final 15 Open bid trickled down to the fifth-place bracket, and Premier Nebraska had one more obstacle to overcome. After a long, agonizing wait that went deep into the afternoon, 15 Gold met HPSTL 15 Royal to decide the division's final bid. Nebraska's torchbearers would have to take down a squad eager to defend home territory.

And that's what 15 Gold did. Premier Nebraska soared to a sweep to claim fifth place outright and swipe the final GJNC bid. A return to Nationals beckons, and another podium chase begins.

https://twitter.com/KingsleyATK/status/2022777596648309224?s=20

Gerdes

A Memorable Introduction

This spring has already given us quite an early glimpse at Nebraska's Class of 2029.

15 Gold's stacked roster has demonstrated that the future of the Great Plains Region is in good hands. The 15s age group is a fascinating contingent to cover, with athletes at various development stages in their prep careers. Premier Nebraska's top 15s crew has been ahead of the curve and has now logged some serious reps in the national spotlight.

This takes us back to our coverage of 15 Gold at Triple Crown NIT. Last month's Kansas City trip was a very formative experience for Premier Nebraska. It turned into the "rise of the opposites" with Falyn O'Connell and [player_tooltip player_id='918755' first='Kenli' last='Donner'] shouldering six-rotation roles. We knew the O'Connell-Donner duo could set the pace at the net, but their all-around skills were jarring.

Having two game-changing opposites also allows 15 Gold to wield two dynamic setters on the other side of the dial. [player_tooltip player_id='846878' first='Maci' last='Falcone'] and [player_tooltip player_id='847923' first='Andie' last='Blomenkamp'] have been incorporated into every lineup permutation imaginable. They can each pilot a 5-1 and have ample physicality to wall up on the right pin. MEQ provided further evidence of this rotational versatility.

We can also include [player_tooltip player_id='803699' first='Sami' last='Curnyn'] as the "wildcard" player in the 15 Gold arsenal. She can dish the offense from the back row or fill in for one of the opposites in the right-back area. Anything is possible.

Labedz

Premier Nebraska's cast of setters can look to other terminators besides the right sides. We can drum up the "three-headed monster" theme again with [player_tooltip player_id='896272' first='Berkley' last='Gerdes'], [player_tooltip player_id='815053' first='Lucy' last='Labedz'], and [player_tooltip player_id='850372' first='Marianna' last='Zephier-Murphy'] running the show in the middle. 15 Gold's oscillation between one- and two-setter offenses allows us to see this trio run various routes in the front row. Gerdes' climb in the Premier Nebraska gym has been extraordinary, giving 15 Gold another layer of depth for the 2026 campaign. This entire unit has made past strides at Prep Dig circuit events and landed on our 2029 radar right away.

No Open-qualified team is complete without its left-side anchors. [player_tooltip player_id='932953' first='Elayne' last='Graver'] and [player_tooltip player_id='884227' first='Jayla' last='Green'] have embraced this niche for 15 Gold and have made the most of out-of-system swings throughout the year. Green is also ready-made for an all-around role with her tremendous first contacts.

We'll tie everything together at the libero spot. This is [player_tooltip player_id='780405' first='Whitney' last='Mertens']'s place to shine. She was a frequent discussion topic during our early-season coverage at regional tournaments. We now know her quick instincts and steady platform can translate to the high-pressure environment of USAV Qualifiers. Mertens remains a can't-miss defender in a logjam of stars on our 2029 watch list.

And you can add Premier Nebraska to your GJNC watch list, too. 15 Gold is back.

Bid Tracker

18 Open

Premier Nebraska 18 Gold - KC MLK

17 Open

[program_tooltip program_id='428743' first='VCNebraska' last=''] 17 Elite - NLQ

[program_tooltip program_id='428717' first='Nebraska' last='ONE'] 17 Synergy - NEQ

15 Open

Premier Nebraska 15 Gold - MEQ
