Weekend 2 of the USAV Iowa Regionals went down this past weekend at the RecPlex in West Des Moines. The 15U Division featured really good teams and players competing at a high level throughout.

In the first of the Prep Dig Iowa positional rundowns from the event, we take a closer look at a loaded setter spot. Excellent performances show its a position of strength in Iowa's 2029 Class.

*A note on who's featured in this write-ups: They're student-athletes I'd not yet written evaluations for this club season. Plenty of players stood out in West Des Moines that have evaluations from the campaign.

If I were naming an MVP from the USAV 15U Iowa Regional tournament in late March, Ehler would be the pick. Despite playing with a painful foot injury, the Tipton freshman dominated the action whenever she was on the court. I didn't get a chance to scout Tipton during the fall, meaning the last time I saw her was last club season. Ehler is tracking towards being one of the state's best. That arrival is not far off. She brings a deep bag of talents to the court, starting with unusual height and long arms at the position. Ehler can accomplish feats physically that others cannot. The lefty puts the ball down on dumps to multiple locations and with a heavy lefty swing. If the pass is moving with momentum to the net and the defense is susceptible, it's a kill. She'd be a heck of a right-side hitter. As far as her main job, Ehler consistently puts the ball on the money to the attackers with an advantage. Quick-twitch athleticism and explosion off of the court make her an excellent defender. The potential here is through the roof.

Buhman showed she was a team player as a Sumner-Fredericksburg freshman in 2025, moving off her best position to contribute to the cause in other areas. The ninth-grader ripped off a team-best 375 kills (.310). She added 97 assists, 95 digs and 24.0 blocks. I hadn't scouted her game since last club season when seeing her at the USAV 15U Iowa Regional in late March. It's safe to say she'll step in as an impactful setter for the Cougars this coming season. Tall with long arms for the position, Buhman is an excellent athlete that moves fluidly around the court. She sees the floor well and delivers precise sets. The aforementioned athleticism and leaping ability help her throw up a strong block and end points. Buhman holds up well defensively in the back row. With plenty of development room ahead, Buhman has a good chance to reach her considerable ceiling.

I caught Kriegel in action at the beginning of the club season during the M1 Rochester Elite Scrimmages in early January. That the first time scouting her in person since the last club campaign. The growth of her game was noticeable. It continued throughout the last three months leading up to the USAV 15U Iowa Regional at the end of March. Kriegel had made another jump forward in her development. She engineered a third-place finish in the tournament with a broad base of skills at the setter position. Kriegel has a great feel for match flow and picks up information about the opponent with each point. She exploits holes in the defense whether setting up the right attacker or by dumping the ball into empty areas with precision. A good athlete with sharp reflexes, Kriegel defends well in the back row and holds up in serve-receive. Her defense at the net is improving with more room to grow.

Craig plays for successful club and prep programs, leading to proper development and plenty of potential. It looked like the Waukee freshman was starting to realize some of her volleyball upside when watching her at the USAV 15 Iowa Regionals in late March. Craig is athletic and moves smoothly around the court to her spot. Once there, she delivers a soft set with optimal elevation for a given attacker. It ends up in a lot of clean swings for PowerPlex 15 Mendieta. Craig's height and long arms aid her in setting but also help produce on the block and in putting the ball down on the other side of the net. As a ninth-grader on the varsity of a Class 5A Top 10 team last season, she came up with 93 assists and 22 digs in 16 sets. A breakout could be on board in 2026.

[program_tooltip program_id='555793' first='RVA' last='Roots'] 15U Gladden turned a No. 2 seed in its Saturday pool into a USAV Nationals Freedom Division bid during the Iowa Regionals in late March. The team lost its first match of the weekend and two of its first three competitions but managed to fight back into the challenge round and, eventually, the gold bracket. Markway was at the controls, adjusting to passes of all kinds and keeping the system in sync. She mixed up her offerings effectively and made great decisions on where to go with the ball. Markway's attackers looked comfortable with the sets she provided, helping increase efficiency. Not the tallest player at her position, she jumps well to defend at the net and moves well laterally to do the same in the back row. Markway is sound in serve-receive.
