15-17's "Dawgs" of the Backrow

Dawg is a term I, and many other coaches, use to describe a play style that's aggressive and intimidating. For a player to have a "dawg" mentality, they must be able to lay it all on the line all of the time. Liberos and defensive specialists are the positions that need this mentality to be successful at any level of volleyball. Although usually small in stature, these are some of the biggest Dawgs this club season.    Jeffus is a reliable DS/L who consistently demonstrates toughness and composure on the court. She effectively transitions into the libero role for EVA's 17 Elite squad, doing so with notable poise and efficiency. Her ability to move seamlessly between defensive specialist and libero highlights her versatility, as she maintains a steady level of confidence and leadership throughout. Jefus also brings a competitive edge that elevates team energy, contributing to extended rallies and overall defensive stability.     Wickersham has emerged as a promising and dynamic presence on the court, demonstrating both resilience and consistency in high-pressure situations. She excels defensively, using her quickness and body control to dig hard-driven attacks and extend rallies. Her ability to read the game allows her to position herself effectively, while her reaction time enables her to adjust to unexpected changes in ball trajectory. Beyond her technical skill set, Wickersham competes with noticeable intensity and enthusiasm, combining controlled aggression with a clear eagerness to engage on every play.     Merritt is a reliable and assertive presence in serve receive, consistently controlling her seams and taking initiative to direct passes into her zone. Her ability to minimize errors and keep the team in-system enhances overall offensive efficiency and builds confidence among teammates. Defensively, she reads the game well and effectively covers the middle court, producing digs that extend rallies and create transition opportunities. Her consistency and court awareness make her a steady and impactful back-row contributor.     Lillian Vu is a composed and reliable back-row defender who consistently demonstrates strong positional awareness and control. She reads opposing hitters well and moves efficiently to establish optimal defensive positioning. Vu excels at handling high-velocity attacks, using a stable platform to keep passes in-system. Her ability to deliver controlled first contacts supports offensive transitions and allows her team to maintain structure throughout rallies.
