At the Northeast Qualifiers I had the opportunity to watch all the clubs playing in the USA Division. On the next day I expanded my lenses to watch all the teams who made the first Division in the USA Division and the Liberty Division. This article talks about all the teams who advanced in the Liberty Division after the first round of pool play.

Virginia Juniors was the only club to earn a bid at these Northeast Qualifiers. Because they already owned a lower Freedom bid, that bid passed to the Libero Huskies club. That now gives the Chesapeake Region perhaps a record 28 bids for Junior Nationals spread over 13 different clubs in the Region. New opportunities have opened up with Paramount 17 Nick winning an Open bid in the Big South and Paramount 15 Nick this weekend snagging an Open bid at the Show Me Qualifier. They snuck into the gold bracket despite having a 1-2 record in pool play on day two. With six of the eight gold medal bracket teams already possessing Open bids and four Open bids available Paramount is assured of a bid.

When you consider six of the top 12 teams that made it to the gold bracket in the Liberty Division were DMV teams, this was a very successful local showing, even though only one team came away with a bid.

Virginia Juniors

[player_tooltip player_id='756342' first='Olivia' last='Baick']

Virginia Juniors swept past six of their first seven opponents to start the tournament. In their one three set match they lost the opener to Princeton National 25-16 but bounced back to win the next two sets 25-13, 15-10. In the semi-finals of the gold bracket APV National Black swept them 25-18, 25-14. This set up a third place bid match against Black Marquise, like APV another North Texas team. They lost the first set 22-25 but were able to again bounce back to win the next two sets and the third remaining Liberty Bid 25-16, 15-5.

The engine for this offense is carried by left side [player_tooltip player_id='754650' first='Madison' last='Meiring'], who buries balls from the back or front row. Her big challenge is that since most teams know she carries the brunt of the offense the other teams target her with the serve to distract her from transitioning to hit. One of the areas she needs to improve on is that passing game. She struggled a bit with that skill against APV National Black. She did have four kills in the set after I got there, with Virginia Juniors carrying a 12-7 lead. They failed to hold the lead losing that opening set 25-18.

Virginia Juniors has a strong libero in [player_tooltip player_id='887998' first='Jenevieve' last='Crowder'] and an equally adept defensive specialist in [player_tooltip player_id='756342' first='Olivia' last='Baick']. They are consistent passers and play exceptional defense while finding the floor on multiple occasions to dig the ball up. Setter [player_tooltip player_id='947249' first='Eileen' last='Kim'] also made a fantastic dig on a down the line smash that she popped right back up as if she were playing pepper.

[player_tooltip player_id='763150' first='Samantha' last='Napiwocki'] provides her share of kills from the left side. She normally rotates out in the back row for [player_tooltip player_id='756342' first='Olivia' last='Baick']. At times [player_tooltip player_id='947249' first='Eileen' last='Kim'] runs a 5/1 but in the set I watched [player_tooltip player_id='762226' first='Makayla' last='Simms'] and [player_tooltip player_id='881356' first='Summer' last='Syed'] came in to play right side. [player_tooltip player_id='763155' first='Angelina' last='Yan'] came in as the second setter. They can add a little more offense and blocking to the right side. Summer helped in a combo block with middle [player_tooltip player_id='768482' first='Ella' last='Peay'] then followed shortly after that by putting a ball away.

Their other middle [player_tooltip player_id='947948' first='Ava' last='Ibiezugbe'] ran a good quick tempo set. She also showed some good defensive chops popping a ball up in the back row after finishing a serve.

Virginia Juniors just missed earning a bid when they finished second out of 64 teams in the Sunshine Classic American Division. Only the top team comes away with a bid in American. They were able to squeeze out a Freedom Bid in the Chesapeake Regional Bid championship. Now, they have upped that to a Liberty Bid with a third place finish in the Northeast Qualifier. They play in Salt Lake City in May but the only bids in that tournament are American and Liberty so there will be no benefit in playing in that tournament other than getting court time. And seeing the beautiful mountain scenery of Salt Lake City.

[program_tooltip program_id='489547' first='540' last='Volleyball Academy']

[player_tooltip player_id='778444' first='Zari' last='Northam']

[program_tooltip program_id='489547' first='540' last='Volleyball Academy'] brings some star power on this team, At the Northeast Qualifier they swept past their first six opponents. Three of those matches went three sets with 540 winning the third sets by scores of 15-7, 15-11 and 16-14. This gave them a bye in the gold medal bracket. Perhaps not a good thing as Absolute Black scalded them 25-8, 25-18. Absolute Black would go on to win the tournament, just losing one set along the way.

540 Academy finished fifth, just missing upping their current American bid that they won in the Old Dominion Regional Bid Championship to a Liberty Bid. Their middle [player_tooltip player_id='778444' first='Zari' last='Northam'] is difficult to stop. She is their greatest offensive threat with the ability to put away quick tempo sets as well as higher sets along different areas of the net. [player_tooltip player_id='779119' first='Isabelle' last='Thompson'] runs the offense, setting a 5/1. She and Zari put together a good combo block against [program_tooltip program_id='511606' first='Vienna' last='Elite']. [player_tooltip player_id='963139' first='Journi' last='Carter'] strung together some back row attacks while still delivering from the left side. [player_tooltip player_id='541319' first='Gabrielle' last='Rodrigo'] put up some good blocks playing middle.

[program_tooltip program_id='489547' first='540' last='Volleyball Academy'] already has earned an American Division Bid to Junior Natioals based on their finish at the Old Dominion Bid Championships.

[program_tooltip program_id='450416' first='East' last='Coast Volleyball Club'] Pink

[program_tooltip program_id='450416' first='East' last='Coast Volleyball Club'] Pink won their first five matches. Their first loss came against MOCO Menace in the second round of pool play. Despite the loss to MOCO Menace, they still qualified to play in the gold bracket. They swept past [program_tooltip program_id='476729' first='Paramount' last=''] Maggie in the first round of the gold bracket then were swept by Virginia Juniors in the second round 25-22, 25-23.

East Coast was led on offense by their two left sides [player_tooltip player_id='881134' first='Jaycee' last='Plumley'] and [player_tooltip player_id='962163' first='Emerson' last='Knowles']. Jaycee played some good defense in the back row while also generating offense from the backrow.

This East Coast Pink is a second team to East Coast Black in the Old Dominion Region. Despite coming in second in the Old Dominion Regional championship it appears they chose not to take the bid. This allowed the third place team [program_tooltip program_id='489547' first='540' last='Volleyball Academy'] to earn the American bid.

MOCO Menace

Another team that started out strong by winning their first four matches. The last three of those match wins MOCO won in three sets by scores of 15-9, 15-8, 15-10. They lost the second match to VEVA Brave Blue on day two which brought up a match against [program_tooltip program_id='450416' first='East' last='Coast Volleyball Club'] Pink. A win would put them into first, however a loss would spin them into a three way tie for second. It took three sets but MOCO was able to pull it out for a 25-20, 25-27, 15-10 win. This gave them a first round bye in the gold bracket where APV Nationals Black roasted them 25-12, 25-14. That eliminated them from bid contention.

MOCO has a nice well rounded team with [player_tooltip player_id='956005' first='Zenia' last='Shaikh'] setting. She debuted in our class of 2028 rankings at 151. Zenia served up a couple aces in set three in a match against AVA Elite that gave MOCO a 12-9 lead. They were down 8-9 in that third set but a kill by [player_tooltip player_id='956006' first='Katarina' last='Haag'] gave MOCO the serve back at 9-9. MOCO ended it with a tip by [player_tooltip player_id='956007' first='Eliose' last='Smith'] over the middle block that hit the floor for a 13-10 lead. Eloise followed with a big block and then a kill on an overset to give them the 15-10 win. Always love the libero play of [player_tooltip player_id='754674' first='Clarke' last='Rodney'], who lined up in a two person serve receive with [player_tooltip player_id='754662' first='Abigail' last='Rekhtman'].

MOCO Menace has yet to qualify for Nationals but they are deserving. Still some season left but there is always AAU.

Liberty Elite

Liberty Elite finished ninth. They won their first three matches, the last two going three sets with 15-13 and 17-15 wins. It was a bit of a struggle on day two. They played in a three team pool and lost both matches. This put them in a crossover with PVC Black, which they won 25-14, 17-25, 15-9. This put them in the gold bracket where they lost in the first round 25-22, 26-24.

Liberty Elite is led by [player_tooltip player_id='963173' first='Rylie' last='Woltz']. Last year she played as a frosh for Urbana. They reached the finals of the class 4 Maryland state championships before losing to Broadneck in three. She was one of two frosh who appeared on the roster.

[program_tooltip program_id='476729' first='Paramount' last=''] Maggie

[program_tooltip program_id='476729' first='Paramount' last=''] Maggie won two of three on the first day to finish second in their pool. They lost to the eventual second place team APV National Black in their last match of the day 25-14, 25-23. On the second day they split their two matches, however a win over American Red 24-26, 25-18, 15-6 in a crossover match placed them in the gold bracket. They lost in the first round to [program_tooltip program_id='450416' first='East' last='Coast Volleyball Club'] Pink 25-22, 25-15.

Lila Michaelis played a strong right side while [player_tooltip player_id='962155' first='Malia' last='Thornton'] put up a good block in the middle. At 5'11" Malia has an approach jump of 10 feet. Her game is still a bit raw, but she brings strong athleticism to the position.

American Red

mia flores

American Red dropped down to the silver bracket after losing a crossover match to [program_tooltip program_id='476729' first='Paramount' last=''] Maggie. They lost in the first round of the silver bracket.

Impressed with the hands of setter [player_tooltip player_id='764043' first='Mia' last='Flores']. The performance moved her from the watch list to the rankings for the class of 2029. Their libero [player_tooltip player_id='943377' first='Mia' last='Torres Pimentel'] also played well. [player_tooltip player_id='943377' first='Mia' last='Torres Pimentel'] appears on our watch list.

[program_tooltip program_id='511606' first='Vienna' last='Elite'] Travel

The only loss for [program_tooltip program_id='511606' first='Vienna' last='Elite'] on the first day was to [program_tooltip program_id='450416' first='East' last='Coast Volleyball Club'] Pink 25-23, 25-17. On the second day they went winless, dropping them down to the Bronze bracket. They lost in the finals of the bronze bracket to VEVA Brave Blue 25-19, 25-14.

Came away impressed with the hitting of [player_tooltip player_id='945610' first='Hannah' last='Wiggins']. A bit undersized but she put some heat on the ball with a back row attack as well as providing thunder in the front row. She debuts in our class of 2029 rankings at 124. Sabine Piguet hit a ball well from the left side, but normally plays right side.
