They play through structure. First contact is clean enough to keep them in system, and when they are, they run a balanced offense that forces the block to stay honest. They're not just pushing the ball outside. They're working to hold the middle, create space, and give their pins better looks. When they're able to do that consistently, the offense becomes much harder to defend.

You can see it early in matches.

When the pass is on line, the setter is square, and now the tempo is available. Middles are holding, pins are getting cleaner swings, and the block has to make a decision instead of sitting on one option. That's where this group starts to create separation.

[player_tooltip player_id='734119' first='Lorelei' last='Candler'] is a big part of that. She runs the offense with a consistent release and does a strong job keeping hitters in rhythm. The ball comes out on time, and that allows attackers to stay aggressive instead of adjusting late. What matters more is how she handles the off-system ball. When the pass drifts, she still delivers something hittable and keeps the offense moving forward. It's not always perfect, but it's controlled.

[player_tooltip player_id='734118' first='Callie' last='Spanos'] complements that with a steady presence and strong decision making. She reads the pass well and understands when to push tempo and when to reset the rally. There's no panic when the system breaks down. She keeps things organized and allows the offense to stay balanced over time.

With that foundation, the pins are able to work.

[player_tooltip player_id='734123' first='Ella' last='Pieters'] brings size at 6'0” and creates a high contact point that is difficult to defend. She's able to swing over the block and stay aggressive when the ball is in system. As rallies extend, she continues to stay available, which gives the setters a reliable option when the play breaks down. That consistency matters late in sets.

[player_tooltip player_id='586861' first='Willow' last='Kumprey'] adds control and shot selection to the outside. She doesn't force swings when the ball isn't perfect. Instead, she adjusts, keeps the ball in play with purpose, and gives the team another opportunity to transition. Over the course of a match, that ability to stay efficient starts to show.

[player_tooltip player_id='586532' first='Finnley' last='Bolson'] continues to stay engaged and available throughout rallies. She doesn't drift out if she's not the first option. She stays active, keeps moving, and gives the setters another outlet, which helps prevent the offense from becoming predictable.

Through the middle, this group continues to take up space and influence how teams attack.

[player_tooltip player_id='734122' first='Grace' last='Hoverson'], at 6'2”, impacts both sides of the ball. She's getting her hands across the net and forcing hitters into tougher swings. Even when it doesn't result in a block point, it changes the quality of contact coming over the net. That affects where teams are willing to go offensively.

[player_tooltip player_id='563047' first='Ayla' last='Jarecki'] stays connected to the block and does a good job closing to the antenna. She moves well laterally and supports the defense behind her by taking away angles. Middles who stay disciplined in their movement allow the entire system to function better.

[player_tooltip player_id='734120' first='Jiada' last='Aokoh'] adds another middle option who continues to stay active in transition. She moves along the net and makes herself available, which holds the block and creates space for the pins. That presence doesn't always show up in stats, but it impacts the flow of the offense.

In the back row, they stay consistent enough to keep everything connected.

[player_tooltip player_id='734116' first='Addisen' last='Hester'] controls first contact and keeps the offense in system. She gets to her spot early, keeps her platform angles clean, and delivers passes that allow the setters to run tempo instead of just managing the rally. It's simple, and it works.

[player_tooltip player_id='734115' first='Lexi' last='Sheffield'] reads the game well and covers ground. She's not reacting late. She's getting there early, staying balanced, and keeping the ball in front of her. That allows the team to extend rallies and create more transition opportunities.

What separates this group is how they handle extended play.

They don't rush to end points. They stay within their structure, even when the rally breaks down. The first swing doesn't end it, they reset. The second doesn't, they reset again. Over time, that consistency forces the other side into lower-percentage swings.

You can see it build as sets go on.

The block starts to take away more space. The defense is already in position. The offense gets another opportunity to run. That cycle continues, and it begins to wear teams down. It's not flashy. It just adds up.

Heading into The Gauntlet, that's where they'll be tested.

They're going to see teams that can serve tougher and push them off the net more consistently. They're going to see faster, more physical blocks that take away first looks. That's where first contact, setter decision making, and out-of-system execution all become critical.

They have the structure to handle it.

Now it's about how consistent they are when the pace increases and the margin gets smaller.

For college coaches, this is a team you stay on to evaluate how they manage tempo, how they handle off-system play, and how they stay connected through transition. Watch how the setters keep hitters in rhythm, how the pins adjust mid-rally, how the middles take away space, and how the back row keeps everything in system.

There's value in how they play.

And that's what translates. ~Theresa@prepdigdakotas

In Case You Missed It
