The new PrepDig California 2029 Rankings have officially been released.

While I am not the California ranker, I spend a lot of time talking with athletes about their development, goals, challenges, and growth. I hear about the lessons they are learning from coaches, the habits they are building in practice, and the areas of their game they are working to improve.

Rankings create attention, but the most interesting part is often the athlete behind the number.

A ranking is a projection of someone's future collegiate potential, not a reflection of their current ability. It cannot tell you how they think, how they respond to adversity, what they are learning, or what motivates them to keep improving.

So rather than focus on the ranking, I wanted to give several ranked California athletes an opportunity to share their own perspective on who they are becoming as volleyball players.

Their answers revealed athletes who are learning how to lead, stay composed under pressure, embrace coaching, and take ownership of their development.

[player_tooltip player_id='911387' first='Amelia' last='Houtzer'] has become a much more complete volleyball player than she was when this club season began.

One of the biggest areas of growth has been her ability to impact the game even when a kill is not available. She has developed better court vision, become more intentional about creating out-of-system situations for opponents, and added several new shots to her offensive toolbox. A few months ago, some of those options did not exist in her game. Today, she feels comfortable attacking deep cross, high line, 4x4, and her personal favorite, a quick throw to the donut.

The confidence behind those skills did not appear overnight.

Amelia credits her coaches, Tyler and Jalen, with helping expand both her game and her belief in what she is capable of doing on the court. Tyler challenged her to see more possibilities offensively, while Jalen helped her become more confident in serve receive through patience, repetition, and creative training.

Before every serve, Amelia and her fellow passers squeeze each other's hands before the whistle. It is a small gesture, but it reflects something important about how she views pressure situations. While some athletes become isolated when matches tighten up, Amelia leans into the relationships around her. Trusting teammates, encouraging each other, and staying connected helps her perform with confidence when the match becomes uncomfortable.

Her summer schedule will keep her busy. Between camps, showcases, and additional training opportunities, Amelia plans to continue investing in both skill development and recovery. She hopes opportunities like UA Next and NTDP become part of her future, but her approach remains focused on daily improvement and making sure every rep contributes to long-term growth.

[player_tooltip player_id='569569' first='Anaya' last='Dela Fuente']'s game is centered on patience.

Earlier this year, Anaya underwent surgery and missed her high school season while recovering. For an athlete who loves to compete, being forced to slow down was one of the hardest lessons she has faced.

She admitted that she used to be the type of player who wanted to rush the process. Get back faster. Improve faster. Move on from setbacks faster.

Recovery taught her something different.

I had to work hard to get back and it was a very long process.

The experience changed the way she approaches both volleyball and life. She is becoming more self-aware on the court, taking responsibility for mistakes without allowing them to define her, and learning how to focus on one task at a time rather than letting her thoughts drift in every direction.

One of the biggest lessons came from her coaches, who challenged her to earn everything.

My coach has challenged me to earn my spot.

That mindset seems to have stayed with her. Not because it was easy, but because she learned growth often happens when athletes stop looking for shortcuts and start embracing the work.

As she continues preparing for the summer, her focus remains on rebuilding her game while continuing to take care of the most important part of the process: her health.

[player_tooltip player_id='778161' first='Sammie' last='Campbell'] focuses on helping the people around her.

As a libero, she takes pride in creating opportunities for teammates to succeed. Sometimes that means helping hitters identify open areas of the court. Other times it means taking on more responsibility in serve receive so attackers can focus on scoring. The details may seem small, but they are the types of actions that help teams function more efficiently.

Part of my game that I pride myself on is my ability to lead my team.

That leadership extends beyond communication. Sammie understands that confidence can be contagious, especially during difficult moments. Before every point, she reminds herself, "Give me the ball." The phrase helps her stay aggressive, trust her training, and embrace pressure rather than avoid it.

This summer, Sammie plans to continue developing her platform consistency while improving her strength, speed, and endurance. Like many great liberos, she understands that long-term growth often comes from mastering the small details that happen hundreds of times throughout a season.

[player_tooltip player_id='534239' first='Cadence' last='Talaga'] wants to understand the way of the game.

This season, her coaches challenged her to become a student of the game by recognizing why certain decisions work, why teams make specific adjustments, and how individual actions impact the bigger picture.

That challenge has helped her develop a deeper understanding of volleyball and strengthened her confidence when matches become chaotic.

When pressure rises, Cadence relies on preparation. Knowing she has invested the time and effort before the match allows her to stay composed and trust herself in the moment.

As she looks ahead to the summer, she is excited about opportunities to continue learning, competing, and growing. Her responses reflected an athlete who understands that volleyball IQ is built through curiosity as much as repetition.

[player_tooltip player_id='734068' first='Fern' last='Udell']'s growth this season has expanded beyond the traditional responsibilities of a middle blocker.

One of the biggest lessons she has learned is that her impact is not limited to blocks and kills. Communication, leadership, and helping create energy on the court all play a role in how she contributes to her team.

That realization has helped shape her confidence.

When matches become intense, Fern focuses on staying present and trusting the preparation she has put into her game. Instead of worrying about mistakes or future points, she works to stay connected to the current play and the teammates around her.

As she continues developing, Fern is focused on becoming an athlete who can influence matches in multiple ways. She is beginning to understand that some of the most important contributions never appear on a stat sheet.

[player_tooltip player_id='548564' first='Madison' last='Nolting'] has learned the value of composure.

Earlier in her volleyball journey, difficult moments could sometimes create frustration. This season, she has worked to respond differently.

Rather than allowing emotions to dictate decisions, Madison has focused on staying calm, trusting her training, and making better choices under pressure. That growth has helped her become a more reliable teammate and a more confident competitor.

She has been expanding her understanding of the game and continuing to develop new ways to impact her team.

As summer opportunities approach, Madison appears focused on continuing that process, finding ways to improve while remaining committed to the habits that have helped her grow this year.

Johanna Lawleris placing emphasis on making smarter volleyball decisions.

Rather than focusing solely on power, Johanna is focused on her court awareness and ability to place the ball where defenders are not. She believes that becoming more intentional with her attacks has helped her make fewer errors while creating better opportunities for her team to score.

Confidence has also become easier to maintain because of the trust she has in the people around her.

Johanna shared that support from teammates and encouragement from the bench help her stay composed during pressure situations. Knowing everyone is working toward the same goal allows her to focus on the next ball instead of worrying about mistakes.

This season, her coach challenged her to improve her energy and effort on the court. Johanna responded by becoming more intentional about bringing energy to every match and learning to believe in herself more consistently.

As summer approaches, she is looking forward to attending the University of Georgia Volleyball Camp, T Street Volleyball Coaches Camp, and other college camp opportunities. Along the way, she plans to continue working on her vertical jump and becoming a more physical attacker while maintaining the court awareness that has become an important part of her game.

While recovering from an injury, [player_tooltip player_id='767151' first='Gemma' last='Davis'] focused on what she could control. She made it a priority to bring energy, celebrate teammates, and stay engaged from the sidelines.

I've shown up for my team and have been the most celebratory and positive teammate and always cheering hard from the sidelines.

That mindset has helped her stay connected to the game while continuing to work through the recovery process.

Confidence has also become an important focus. Gemma shared that maintaining a positive mindset and believing in herself helps her navigate both challenges and opportunities as she works toward returning to full strength.

This season, her coaches challenged her to improve her transition off the net and develop better stamina. She responded by investing time into strength training, endurance work, and improving her execution. Even while recovering, she continues finding ways to improve.

As summer approaches, Gemma is looking forward to attending college camps, exploring potential college opportunities, and continuing to build strength in preparation for both high school and club volleyball. Her responses reflected an athlete who understands that growth can still happen, even when progress looks different than expected.
