Communication. Confidence. Adaptability. Body language. The ability to stay present when the game speeds up.

For liberos and defensive specialists, those details matter.

The athletes featured below all experienced the camp through a different lens, but each left with a clearer understanding of what helps back-row players separate themselves as the level continues to rise.

As the pace increased throughout the camp, Lynn Choe's first contact and communication continued to hold steady. Whether it was serve receive or a defensive touch, she understood how much a quality first contact can influence everything that follows.

Communication was always necessary for us, as we did drills that really required us to speak and use our voices.

What resonated most throughout the camp was her perspective on imperfection.

As she shared, "Learning to adapt to imperfect situations makes you stand out amongst others who train for these perfect situations."

That realization seemed to stick with her throughout the day. Volleyball is rarely perfect. The athletes who continue moving forward are often the ones who adjust fastest when things break down.

During 6-on-6 play, she felt her communication and serve receive training showing up naturally. The game was moving faster, but she trusted her preparation and stayed engaged in every rally.

With college camps, Open Division Nationals, beach volleyball, and high school season all approaching, Lynn's summer will be busy.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

Defense has become one of the most reliable parts of Ava Saffell's game.

Throughout the camp she found herself making plays she may not have reached earlier in the season, a reflection of the work she has invested into improving her range and court awareness.

One of her favorite moments came during a serve receive drill where she felt completely locked in. The ball was coming off her platform cleanly, communication was flowing, and everything seemed to click at once.

What stayed with her most, however, had little to do with passing technique.

Several college coaches emphasized the importance of body language and positivity, especially during difficult moments. For a libero, that message carries weight. The position often requires athletes to steady the court when things are not going smoothly.

Ava appears to understand that leadership is not always about being the loudest person in the gym. Sometimes it is about the energy you bring to the people around you.

With Nationals, beach season, and more training still ahead, she continues to build her game.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

One of the benefits of attending a college camp is hearing different voices.

For Blake Gurney, that became one of the most valuable parts of the experience.

Athletes spend most of the season working with the same coaches, hearing the same terminology, and viewing the game through a familiar lens. This camp offered a chance to hear how different college coaches evaluate players and what details stand out to them.

That perspective reinforced something Blake already seems to embrace.

Growth requires ownership.

Whether it was communication, body language, or defensive decision-making, she recognized that development does not happen by accident. Athletes have to be willing to absorb information, apply it, and continue building their game.

As the day progressed, she found herself leaning into leadership and communication, two qualities that naturally fit the libero position.

With Nationals, beach tournaments, camps, and training all ahead, Blake's summer schedule is full. The willingness to continue learning from different coaches may end up being one of her greatest assets.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

One moment during a libero drill revealed a lot about Kendra Killian.

After missing a ball she felt she should have reached, she immediately asked for another opportunity.

Not because she was frustrated.

Because she wanted to figure it out.

That response reflects the type of athlete she appears to be.

As the camp progressed and the speed of play increased, Kendra found herself trusting her instincts more. Reps that once required extra thought started becoming more automatic. Her reads felt cleaner. Her reactions felt quicker.

The coaches reinforced several messages throughout the day, but one in particular stayed with her. Skills matter, but so do attitude, body language, and how athletes respond after mistakes.

Those qualities often become visible when the game gets faster.

Kendra's reflections suggest she is beginning to understand how much value those details can carry.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

For Alexis Lu, consistency showed up in serve receive.

As drills progressed and competition increased, she continued delivering quality first contact while helping organize the court around her. Those moments may not always generate highlights, but they often determine whether an offense can stay in rhythm.

Several coaches discussed visibility throughout the day, not visibility through rankings or social media, but visibility through impact.

Communication. Effort. Leadership.

The willingness to do the little things repeatedly.

Those ideas aligned naturally with the role Alexis already embraces.

She left the showcase encouraged by the progress she has made in serve receive and motivated to continue expanding her defensive range, reads, and overall impact on the back row.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

Sometimes a simple conversation changes the way an athlete sees the game.

For Sieun Sophia Choi, that moment came during serve receive.

Like many athletes, she found herself chasing the perfect pass. Every rep carried pressure. Every mistake felt bigger than it needed to be.

Then a college coach asked a simple question.

What is the goal?

Sophia explained that she wanted to deliver the perfect pass. The coach smiled and reminded her that the goal was simply a good pass.

The message landed immediately.

Volleyball often becomes harder when athletes expect perfection. Trusting training, staying positive, and continuing to compete after mistakes usually creates better results than chasing flawless execution.

One of Sophia's favorite moments came later in the day when she battled through a difficult stretch, stayed mentally engaged, and helped create one of the longest rallies of the session.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

If You Enjoyed This Article, Help Us Keep the Momentum Going

🔥 Athletes

The libero and defensive specialists featured here all walked into the college camp hoping to improve their game. Many left with a better understanding of what college coaches value when the pace increases. Communication. Confidence. Body language. Adaptability. The ability to stay engaged when the game becomes imperfect.

Study this group closely. Notice how they responded to feedback, embraced challenges, and learned to trust their training. The athletes who continue separating themselves are often the ones who understand that great defense is about far more than keeping the ball off the floor.

📣 Club Coaches & Directors

Thank you for creating environments where athletes learn how to compete, communicate, and think through the game. The players featured in this article repeatedly pointed to coachability, leadership, consistency, and attention to detail as some of their biggest takeaways from the camp experience.

If one of your athletes is featured, celebrate them. Share the article, tag @PrepDigCA, and help others recognize the work that goes into building strong back-row leaders.

🎯 College Coaches

One of the most interesting themes throughout this camp was how quickly these athletes recognized that the libero and defensive specialist positions require much more than passing and defense. They spoke about communication, managing emotions, creating trust with teammates, adapting to new situations, and staying composed when the game speeds up.

These are the qualities that often continue translating as athletes move through club volleyball, high school competition, camps, and future recruiting opportunities.

🙏 Parents & Supporters

Thank you for supporting the long process of development that comes with becoming a reliable teammate and competitor. The growth highlighted throughout this article reflects countless practices, conversations, lessons, and moments of learning that happen long before anyone is watching.

If an athlete's story resonated with you, share this article and help celebrate the work that goes into becoming a more complete libero, defensive specialist, teammate, and leader.

🚀 Upgrade to a PrepDig+ Subscription
Access exclusive rankings, deeper analysis, and the full Prospect Index to follow every athlete's journey.

The PrepDig Showcase Series is designed for athletes who want to take ownership of their recruiting journey and better understand how visibility, evaluation, and opportunity work together.
