Join Prep Dig using code "AVG30" for a discount on your initial membership.

Class 1A in southeastern Minnesota is made up of smaller schools, and while it's sometimes assumed that smaller schools or smaller enrollment means a lower level of play, that couldn't be further from the truth. Year after year, some of the most skilled, well rounded athletes in the state come out of these programs. With school letting out, club season winding down, and summer training/programming getting underway, it's a good time to take a look at Class 1A as a whole and highlight a few players who are expected to make a big impact this fall.

Remember to follow me on Instagram @Prepdigamy and Facebook @PrepDig Amy for up to date event coverage, stories, and more.

I'm really looking forward to seeing Dienst back on the court for Bethlehem Academy this fall. In their 6-2 offense, she'll likely be back in be in a role where she sets half of the time and also takes big swings from the pin, which really speaks to her versatility. Last year she racked up 320 assists as well as 142 kills for her team. What I like most about Dienst is that she plays with a lot of energy and emotion, competes hard on every play, and has grown into a true leader. This offseason, she's been playing with M1 out of the Cities, where she continued to increase her game IQ, skill, and confidence. With her ability to impact the game in multiple ways, I think she is a player who could really stand out in Class 1A this fall.

Entering her junior season, Hansen has been a varsity player for a few years. After putting up 174 kills and 172 digs last year, she's established herself as one of her LA team's most reliable six rotation players. What I appreciate most about her game is her versatility. She can attack from either pin, hit out of the middle, and always seems to find a way to help her team. During club season, I watched her at a tournament in Rochester. The growth in her all around game was very noticeable. She will be exciting to watch as Hansen is expected to be one of the leaders for this group and a major reason why her team has the potential to be a huge contender in class 1A.

If you didn't know what grade she was in, you'd never guess Bednar is only entering her sophomore season. Despite her age, she's already been a huge varsity player for several years and plays with a level of confidence and skill that stands out. After finishing last season with nearly 200 kills, Bednar is once again positioned to be one of the "go to" players for Lyle Pacelli again. What I like most about her and her game is her versatility. She tends to find a way to adapt to just about any ball in any situation. With a young, talented team around her this fall, she'll be looked not only for her skills but also for her leadership.

After stepping into the libero role last season, Corson quickly became the backbone of Fillmore Central's defense. In addition to handling the bulk of the serve receive duties, she also piled up an incredible 582 digs, showcasing not only consistency but toughness. During the offseason, she continued to develop her game, get reps, and build chemistry with her teammates through her schools JO program, Falcon Fire. As Fillmore Central looks to extend its impressive run in back to back state tournament appearances, she is expected to play a major role.

After spending her 7th grade season as primarily a defensive specialist on the varsity where she tallied 147 digs and 37 aces, Garness heads into 8th grade poised for a much larger role. This year, she'll be asked to contribute more on the pins, and she will be ready for the challenge. Like many Mabel-Canton players, Garness has a strong volleyball foundation, but it's rumored that she also spends time competing in beach volleyball. That experience will be a major asset as she transitions to the front row, as beach players are known for their versatility, creativity, and ability to score in a variety of ways. With her defensive background and offensive game IQ, Garness has the potential to become one of the team's most complete players this season.

Strinmoen is probably one of the most versatile players you'll find in Class 1A. Last fall, she played six rotations as an outside hitter for Spring Grove and filled her stat sheet with 112 kills, 254 digs, and 28 aces. This club season, I had the chance to watch her make the switch to libero, where she handled serve receive and played solid left back defense. I am sure she will likely transition back to the outside for the school season where she will no doubt make a huge impact. Spring Grove is typically always among the top teams in Class 1A, and with a player like Strinmoen who can contribute to the success of her team in so many different ways, I don't see that changing anytime soon.
