Not every edge shows up in a highlight reel. At the SoCal Sophomore ID Camp in Irvine, five liberos and defensive specialists stood out for growth that's happened away from the ball, in daily routines, mindset shifts, and the small, repeatable choices that end up deciding who's ready when the lights come on.

Abbygail Martin has built an offseason that looks less like a break and more like a training block. Between on-court coaching sessions, lifting, running, footwork drills, journaling, mental-game study, and yoga, her summer has been a deliberate, self-directed push to get quicker, jump higher, and become the best version of herself as a libero for Bakersfield Christian. The bigger shift this year has been finding her voice. Early feedback pushed her to be louder and more assertive from the back row, and she's spent the year learning to balance that assertiveness without letting it become a distraction. She's candid that she can be hard on herself when things go sideways, and she's worked to keep her body language positive in those moments, borrowing a mentor's mindset of letting bad plays roll off like water off a duck's back. On the court she's vocal by nature; off it, she's more reserved, and she's made a point of pulling in quieter teammates at camps and open gyms the way she wishes someone had done for her.

Cydney Ash brings a specific fix to her communication as a libero for Calabasas. She's always been loud on the court, but this year she's sharpened exactly what that means, replacing generic calls like "go" with names and clear actions so her teammates know precisely what to do in the moment. That precision extends to her game itself, where she describes herself as versatile enough to hit, set, and pass, and competitive enough to want the ball in her hands out of system. Her technical focus this spring has been cutting off seam balls to the corner before they reach middle back, a detail-level read that comes from hours of film and repetition. Looking back at her season, she's settled into more of a just-go mentality as a defender, trusting her first instinct instead of hesitating. She already attended college camps and is building her presence on Instagram as she starts reaching out to coaches directly.

Isabella Navarro has connected her life outside volleyball directly to her performance inside it. A libero for Rancho Cucamonga, she describes herself as her team's anchor, the player who's mentally present for teammates when things get difficult, and she's traced that steadiness back to building a healthier lifestyle overall. That shift showed up immediately in how she approaches practice, treating even the smallest task as a reflection of who she is as a teammate. This sophomore season she has a mindset she wishes she'd had from day one: no fear, just determination to improve after every rep. Her recruiting approach reflects that same discipline, with a plan to send coaches a weekly check-in of film and clips rather than reaching out sporadically. She leads by example through intentional reps, and she's added a vocal dimension to her back-row leadership over the past year as her volleyball IQ has grown.

Natalie Venneau has turned being underestimated into a competitive advantage. As a libero for Centennial, she's noticed that her welcoming presence makes opponents target her early, thinking they've found a weak spot, and she uses that misread to her benefit while it also helps her bond quickly with new teammates. Technically, she's focused on getting comfortable moving to her right side, a key defensive zone she wants to cover more accurately this sophomore season. The more interesting shift is internal: as a self-described perfectionist, she's working on redefining her target as accuracy rather than perfection, a distinction she's had to think through deliberately rather than one that came naturally. Her view of leadership has evolved too, from thinking it meant simply keeping people organized to understanding it as something built through full effort and full communication.

Olivia Kiburtz is managing her sophomore year like a system with multiple inputs. Beyond lifting, plyometrics, and refining her hitting technique for Venice High School, she's made a specific point of reducing her screen time to protect her focus and get closer to her goals. That same intentionality shows up in how she's learned to balance academics, her social life, and her sport without letting any one of them slide. Her leadership has shifted noticeably over the past year, from a quieter presence to someone who communicates constantly before, during, and after every play. She's already emailing college coaches directly as she works to build her name with programs. She's most focused on refining her technique through feedback while building relationships with both coaches and future teammates.
