Durango: Middle Blockers, Life at the Net

It's the position built on timing, footwork, and reading a set before the hitter even commits, and against a Durango field loaded with elite offenses, that split-second decision-making matters more than ever.   Middle blockers don't often get the highlight reel the way outside hitters do. What they get is control. A good middle sets the tempo for the whole defense, and a great one makes an opposing offense hesitate before it even runs its play.   This group lives in that gap.    Katelyn Oerlemans Committed: Stanford (Beach Volleyball   This is Katelyn's fourth time playing Durango, and she wants to close it out the right way. "Durango has always been my favorite tournament to play in, and I want to close out my fourth time playing there with a bang by having fun with my teammates and playing our best against other really talented teams," she said.   Hitting has always been her most consistent skill, the one she's worked on the longest. This year brings a new challenge though. She's playing back row for the first time, and defense is where she's putting in the extra work.   She holds herself and her team accountable, pushing everyone to climb out of a hole when things aren't going well, and that accountability is part of what makes her a natural leader. What she hopes shows up most on film isn't a stat. It's the fun she's having with her best friends and her love for the game itself.   Recently transitioning from indoor to beach, she's committed to continue her volleyball career at Stanford, chasing continued growth and confidence on the sand.   Off the court, she's from Holland and speaks fluent Dutch.   ~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247     Avery Conroy is excited to compete at a high level and see how far her team can push against strong competition.   Her energy and blocking are what her team counts on, along with the positivity she brings to every rotation. She's working on getting faster in transition this season so she can be an even better option for her setter. When things get tough, she keeps her team positive and communicating, refusing to let the moment get too big.   Her energy, communication, and the way she competes for every ball are what she hopes stands out when people watch her play.   She's hoping to play college volleyball at a high level, ideally D1 or D2, while pursuing a strong education alongside it. She's already deep into the process, actively reaching out to coaches and fielding real interest.   Outside of volleyball, she teaches swim lessons, loves working with kids, and is involved in ASB and Christian Leadership at her school.   ~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247     Alisi Joanne Tapa'atoutai Committed: United States Air Force Academy   Alisi is looking forward to testing herself against a higher caliber of competition than she typically sees.   Her kill percentage is what she's most known for, a skill her coaches know they can rely on when the team needs a point. This season, she's putting in extra reps on her own time to make her jump float serve even more lethal.   In tough matches, she stays calm and collected while still playing at the level her team needs. Her teammates would describe her as levelheaded and driven, especially when the pressure is highest. What she wants noticed most is her ball placement and her ability to find open court.   With her future already set at the Air Force Academy, her focus now is simple: keep having fun, keep raising her IQ, and keep sharpening her game heading into the next level.   Outside the gym, she enjoys video games and reading.   ~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247     Nevaeh wants to see how her team responds when it's tested. "I want us to play together, stay confident, and show what we can do as a team," she said.   Blocking and aggression at the net are her signature, backed by a high volleyball IQ that helps her make the right decisions in the moment. She's working on becoming a more versatile hitter this season, refining her footwork and timing so she can score in more than one way.   She stays ready even when the ball isn't coming to her, closing the block, covering her hitters, and communicating, the kind of effort that doesn't always show up on a stat sheet but matters every time she's on the floor.   She's building her list and actively reaching out to coaches as she works toward playing in college.   Outside of volleyball, she volunteers at her church's cafe most Sundays she's not playing, and her family jokes that she's the nosy one, in the best way, because she genuinely cares about the people around her.   ~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247     As a transfer, Alexis is looking forward to something a lot of athletes take for granted, simply building chemistry with a new team. "Our team hasn't had a lot of time all together with me as a transfer, so it is going to be a lot of fun to truly get our chemistry developed and see how well we work with each other," she said.   Blocking is where she's found her confidence, both closing and setting up the block, even as she's regularly shifted between right side and middle. That constant movement is exactly what she's working on this season, along with continuing to sharpen her hitting from the right.   She brings assurance to her team, the belief that no matter what happens, energy has to stay constant. What she wants people to notice most is how she responds in between plays, whether that's after a block or a kill, because she believes the recovery matters more than the moment itself.   She's chasing a Division 1 opportunity and is already actively in touch with coaches while fielding real interest.   Off the court, Alexis has an extraordinary story. She lived with CRPS and FND, conditions that left her paralyzed for two years, before becoming fully healed in July of 2025.   ~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247     Yelena is looking forward to competing alongside her team with one goal in mind, winning the tournament.   Her attitude is her signature, on the court and off it, and it's a strength that helps her lift the people around her and build confidence throughout her team. This season, she's focused on her timing, working to be more consistent as the ball comes to her.   When things get tough, she leans into positivity, refusing to let her team give up until the match is over. What she hopes stands out is that her voice matters just as much as her plays, proof that being a good volleyball player shows up in more than just stats.   She's building her college list and actively reaching out to coaches as she works toward playing at the next level, with hopes of eventually going pro.   Outside of volleyball, she has a deep well of care for people, even those she's never met or isn't close with.   ~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247     Shelbie's focus for the weekend is simple: win games and play well.   She's built her game around using her full toolbox whenever the moment calls for it. This season, she's working on approaching with more strength to generate full power at the net. When the match gets tight, she gets loud, communicating constantly with her teammates to keep everyone locked in.   Her determination is what she wants noticed most, the drive that keeps her working even when things aren't easy.   She hopes volleyball helps shape her into a better person while opening the door to college, and she's already communicating with programs and fielding real interest along the way.
