Scouting Reports, Photos: North Scott Lancers

Connections are strong.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>That thought was the impetus behind developing these scouting-report/photo pieces a few seasons ago to act as yearbook pages. I've written as many of them as I could based on watching teams play in person. Hopefully, they capture that squad in words and pictures, and can be accessed years down the road.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Today, we look at defending Class 4A state champion North Scott, who I watched compete at the Benton Bobcat Invitational earlier this month. The Lancer program, now competing in 5A, beat Burlington and Benton, and lost to Iowa City High and Bondurant-Farrar, each by a 2-1 margin. The versatile athlete was ready for her chance this year, when more playing time was available after the graduation losses from last year. Through the first 45 sets, Schroeder was leading the squad in digs and ranked second in kills. I scouted her in person at the Benton Bobcat Invitational this month. She was standing out through six rotations. An effective attacker thanks to a big vertical leap and power in the swing, Schroeder also holds it down in the back row. She's fluid in serve-receive. The sophomore right-side hitter impressed me with her feel for the game and effectiveness as a two way player. Coming into this week, she'd played fewer sets than a lot of her teammates, but Ervin was a main part of the rotation in Benton, meaning she's emerged because of her loud skill set. Ervin already has been piling up kills and blocks. She's a legit 6-2 with long arms that help her generate power and throw up an effective block. She ranked fourth on the team in kills despite only starting half the matches and playing fewer sets than the other leaders. Eller also contributed digs and blocks to the cause. With graduation losses after 2025, Eller has stepped into a bigger role this fall. She was operating through six rotations when I watched the [program_tooltip program_id='431978' first='Lancers' last=''] compete at the Benton Bobcat Invitational earlier this month. Listed at 5-5, Eller bounces off of the court into a huge vertical leap. The swing is heavy. She can power through the block and play off of it. She also ranked fifth in kills, hitting an efficient .252. It was good to see her competing again at the Benton Bobcat Invitational earlier this season. In a program that lost a lot of production to graduation and needed the presence of veterans, Schroeder looked comfortable in a leadership role. She also was producing as an attacker and a defensive presence in the middle of the net. Schroeder looks taller than the 5-foot-11 at which she's listed and plays bigger than that thanks to long arms. There's a great feel for match flow and getting in position to defend at the net.
