Instead, she has built real setting ability alongside her attack, and that combination is what she believes sets her apart. Before her freshman season, she described her hitting and her ability to read the court as strengths she pairs with her setting, even as a taller athlete. She also talked about a simple coaching cue she relies on in hectic rallies: take a breath.

As a setter, she said, staying controlled matters more than anything. A couple of months into her first season at Mater Dei, she has already seen that growth on the court. “Playing at Mater Dei has been an amazing experience of how to showcase my skills!” she said. “I have learned a deeper understanding of volleyball and how to connect and communicate with all my new teammates. With such little time to get to know my team I grew to learn how to adjust and become a better player.”

Adjusting quickly and connecting with new hitters are exactly what a setter needs, and she is learning both inside one of the top programs in the country. Long term, she is aiming for a strong academic college. For coaches building toward a 6-2 or looking for a big setter who can attack, she is a name to track.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

Rory Corrales plays all over the court, and she sees that versatility as her biggest value to a team. At the SoCal Freshman Showcase, she was named a Top Performing Right Side after consistently attacking deep and challenging defenses with smart shot selection. “What I love about being a setter who can hit and play multiple positions is that I'm a reliable player,” she said. “If someone on my team is sick, absent or injured I can play anywhere my coach needs me to.”

For Rancho Valley VBC, her team is counting on her to set and play outside hitter, adding a fourth position to a résumé that already includes opposite and middle. She said playing all of them keeps her sharp: “Playing all three positions really helps me be more active and aware on the court because I know so many positions and rotations it helps me stay focused when in the game.” That is volleyball IQ built from experience in every spot.

Before her freshman season, she said she was the only freshman on her varsity roster, and she has been a captain on several of her teams. In college, she wants a program built on education, teamwork, and a culture where players push each other.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

Makala Baker has been one of the more consistent freshman setters on our radar since being named a Top Performing Freshman Setter at the SoCal Showcase in July. At 5'11", she has the frame to attack from the right side, and as a lefty she brings a natural advantage on second-ball attacks and setter dumps that defenses have to respect. Time as a hitter has changed how she listens. “Hitting has taught me that hitters truly have a different perspective of the game,” she said. “As a setter sometimes your hitters can sound overdramatic but when they say they need something, they truly need it. So it has taught me it's not all about the setter or pushing your hitters' thoughts aside. It is logical and real feedback.” That mindset pairs with how she sees her responsibility on the floor.

When asked what coaches should watch for in her game play, she said: “In my opinion I would watch my control on floor and how the energy is dependent on my actions and decisions so that is a main thing to look out for.” She operates as the center of her offense while staying open to the hitters around her, a balance many setters take years to find.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

Ella Jordan is one of the clearest examples of the dual-role transition in this group. She played outside hitter in club, then moved to right side and setter for Bishop O'Dowd this fall. “Something I had to change is my position on the court,” she said. “I have noticed that switching positions has made me more versatile on the court.” She plays with a strong sense of how the mental side of the game moves a team. “I noticed when just one person smiles on the court, it can change the whole game,” she said, describing a match against Highlands where her team kept its energy up through a tough result.

Ella also brings the kind of self-awareness coaches value in a young setter. She named committing to a play too early, before reading the court, as a habit she is working through, and naming it is the first step to fixing it. As of today, her dream school is USC but she is actively building her college list. Away from the court she watches court cases and hopes to become a lawyer.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

Scarlett McGuyre has earned recognition from both sides of the net this summer. At the USAV Girls Junior National Championships in June, she stood out on the right side for SC Rockstar 14-Libby, giving her team stability with an offense built on smart decisions and a varied attack. A month later, she was named a Top Performing Freshman Setter at the SoCal Showcase, where she showed soft touch on her back sets and clean hands with very little spin. “I love getting to set and hit,” she said. “Hitting definitely makes me a better setter because when I hit, I love a good set because it gives me a lot of options so I want to give my hitters balls where they can tool the block, hit a smart shot, or crush it. And setting makes me a better hitter because when I am setting, I am always reading the other team's defense and then when I get to hit, I already know their weaknesses and can hit smart and efficiently.” She plays with a scouting mindset that carries from one role to the other. At 6'0", recognized as both a right side and a setter, she fits the dual-role profile as well as anyone in this class.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

Ella Davenport brings an analytical approach to the position. Before her freshman season, she compared setting to solving a puzzle in real time. Her experience as a hitter is what helps her find the right piece. “Being a hitter gave me first-hand experience of the demands of attacking and how important the right height, placement and tempo are for a hitter to have success,” she said. “I now think about how to adjust my sets to help each hitter be more successful. Every hitter is an individual and has a different hitting window that they prefer. In addition to making observations on what worked well or didn't work well, I ask for their feedback and keep open communication as much as possible.”

Ella has already built a plan for the out-of-system moments that test every young setter. “Being a hitter also has helped me identify the strengths of different hitters and be a better decision maker in different situations,” she said. “For example I try to set to the hitter who is the best at tracking a high ball if I receive an out of system pass and alternate between high, quick sets or slower sets depending on the hitter.” She sets each hitter individually instead of giving everyone the same ball, a habit many setters don't develop until college.

Ella is developing inside one of the top programs in California at Torrey Pines, and recently got the opportunity to set on Varsity. She is targeting a college that pairs competitive volleyball with academic rigor.

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

Sasha Fiallo thinks about setting several moves ahead. In her freshman season, she said she tries to stay ten steps ahead when running an offense, and she considers that volleyball IQ her biggest advantage at the position. Her experience at opposite is a big part of that IQ. “Playing opposite helped me as a setter because it gives me a better understanding of what my hitter needs in the moment to succeed,” she said. “I know what it felt like being a hitter and feeling stuck not knowing where to go. With that information and experience, I know when to either push the set out to allow line or to keep it inside to give cross. All this is to keep my hitters hot and put them in the best position possible to score.” That is a freshman thinking about set location as a weapon, not just a delivery.

Sasha also understands when to take over. “Being a hitter before a setter is definitely an advantage because as a setter, you need to know how to be aggressive, especially when you feel more pressure starting to rise on your hitters,” she said. “Those are the best moments to not only keep your offense running and confident, but to of course get in the action a little yourself and rack up your own kills!”

Her college sights are set high, on programs like Stanford or the Ivy League, where academics and volleyball meet at the top level. ~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

~ Michelle Bamford @Coachable247

If You Enjoyed This Article, Help Us Keep the Momentum Going

🔥 Athletes
Take time to explore the player profiles featured in this article. Seven California freshmen who set and hit, and why running an offense from both sides of the ball matters to coaches.

Most young setters are asked to master one job. These seven are learning two. Each one in the class of 2030 lists both setter and right side (or opposite) as her position, and that combination is becoming one of the more valuable profiles in the recruiting conversation.

🔥 Athletes
Take time to explore the player profiles featured in this article. Notice how these athletes talk about the game from both sides of the set: what a hitter needs, how tempo feels from the pin, and how that shapes the way they run an offense. If you play more than one position, don't treat it as a lack of identity. Treat it as an advantage. Every rep you take as a hitter makes you a smarter setter, and every ball you set makes you a smarter hitter.

📣 Club Coaches & Directors
Celebrate the athletes from your program who were featured, and use this list to start a conversation about versatility. Young setters who also hit are developing a skill set many programs need. Give your dual-role players reps in both spots, and help them understand how each role makes them better at the other. Keep your club updated with the California Club Program Database and stay connected to every opportunity we create for exposure.

🎯 College Coaches
These freshmen are setters who can also attack, a profile that fits 6-2 systems, setter-opposite flexibility, and programs that want a setter with a real offensive threat. It's early, but their habits are already visible: communication with hitters, tempo awareness, and composure from both roles. Use PrepDig to start following this group as their roles take shape over the next four years.
