Connections are strong.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>That thought was the impetus behind developing these scouting-report/photo pieces a few seasons ago to act as yearbook pages. I've written as many of them as I could based on watching teams play in person. Hopefully, they capture that squad in words and pictures, and can be accessed years down the road.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Today, we look at Iowa City Liberty, who I watched defeat rival Iowa City High twice this season, the most recent being in Tuesday's championship bracket of the MVC Tournament. That's saying something in a sport whose headlines are dominated by tall people. Miller is not tall. What she is takes a lot of practice and honing of a craft. It takes a love for the sport and a passion to compete. I was reminded of all of those positive traits when watching her perform again in person when she and Liberty took down rival Iowa City High a pair of times this season. The senior is a wall in the back row and a master at kick starting her team's transition game. She loves to be challenged and usually is up to the task. The Lightning senior reminded me of her grit and determination when viewing her compete multiple times during the last several weeks. The Queens College of Charlotte (NC) commitment is a very well-rounded volleyballer. She can take care of business at the pin, succeeding with a combination of power and whit. Wilson has become a consistently reliable competitor in the back row whether standing up against the attack or in turning around serve-receive. She competes like her life depended on it, and the opposition knows it's going to be in a fist fight. Miller combines that mindset with strong overall volleyball skills. It starts with her contributions as a setter, where she runs the offense with precision and consistency. The ball is put where the attacker can most take advantage on a regular basis. Miller sees the court well, allowing her to end points with a swing or well-time setter dump. In recent years, she's expanded her game to swing from the opposite pin, and even terminate the action from the outside or middle. Van Heukelom is one of those kids. The Liberty High senior keeps it positive when she's lining up for the Lightning or when scouting her during the club campaigns. The Wisconsin-Platteville pledge smiles a lot and lifts up her teammates. She also can play a little volleyball. Actually, she can play pretty loudly with a game that's become more consistently good over time. Van Heukelom has been an effective blocker going back to her younger years. She's become more consistent in that endeavor. The performance isn't surprising to folks that have watched her along the club circuit. The senior is a good athlete with a usable vertical leap and heaviness in the swing. Wheeler appears to be improving her consistency in serve-receive and defending at the net.
