Oh, it's our favorite late-October narrative.

Nebraska's prep scene always delivers a few surprises as the pressure ramps up. That's true in any sport, but the parity of junior-level volleyball is rapidly expanding. So, we can expect a few more postseason surges from teams we didn't see coming.

And we wouldn't have it any other way. Call them "Cinderellas" or "sleeper" teams, but Nebraska's list of tournament-worthy teams is far larger than the spaces available in the final bracket. In other words, district play leading up to the tournament could give us plenty of surprises.

Here are a few of our favorite candidates.

Lincoln Southeast

We have vivid memories of Lincoln Southeast's early-season hot streak, and that momentum is building yet again.

Mid-week matches have been a big strength for the Knights, highlighted by recent wins over Columbus, Grand Island, and Lincoln Northwest. That trend has continued through the first two rounds of the HAC Tournament, with the Knights reaching the semifinals via a 3-1 win over Norfolk.

LSE boasts all the talent needed to endure the Class A gauntlet. Multi-position standout [player_tooltip player_id='573382' first='Haleigh' last='Bauer'] has returned to form with nearly five kills per set, and high-impact sophomores like [player_tooltip player_id='960998' first='Grae' last='Korver'], [player_tooltip player_id='933036' first='Vivian' last='Stokes'], and [player_tooltip player_id='557036' first='Circe' last='Tallman'] have added to the stacked lineup.

Even if this isn't the year to go back-to-back on tournament appearances, LSE is primed for success in subsequent seasons.

Platteview

This felt like a clear choice after we've featured several of Platteview's standouts throughout the 2026 campaign.

The Trojans boast one of the most balanced, efficient offenses in the Class B race. [player_tooltip player_id='775972' first='Leah' last='Brunssen'], [player_tooltip player_id='519640' first='Camille' last='Carlson'], and [player_tooltip player_id='811743' first='Brea' last='Weldon'] have all hovered around three kills per set to lead Platteview's terminators. Weldon and junior middle blocker [player_tooltip player_id='959046' first='Norah' last='Haynes'] have maintained a 0.300-plus hitting percentage along the way. [player_tooltip player_id='800497' first='Maddy' last='Stukenholtz'] ties everything together at libero.

This culminates in a 24-7 mark with Platteview on the verge of Class B's top ten.

Douglas County West

The final third of the season has brought out the best in DC West.

This Class C1 contender nearly broke into a top-eight wildcard spot after winning ten of its last twelve matches. DC West logged a clean sweep through the Nebraska Capitol Conference and hopes to replicate 2022's postseason triumph.

We can distribute a lot of credit for the Falcons' 21-8 regular season. Senior terminators [player_tooltip player_id='521209' first='Mallory' last='Shaw'] and [player_tooltip player_id='591577' first='Kinley' last='Nelson'] have been co-leaders atop DC West's scoring charts, and [player_tooltip player_id='773381' first='Kaylee' last='Green'] is not far behind, either. This veteran-laden lineup gets further help from [player_tooltip player_id='773379' first='Ava' last='Newbauer'] and [player_tooltip player_id='772149' first='Emma' last='Kopocis'] at setter and outside hitter, respectively.

Howells-Dodge

Class C2 presents no shortage of options here.

You don't have to look far into the past to find Howells-Dodge's last glimmer of postseason glory. The Jaguars appeared in four out of five postseasons from 2020-2024, highlighted by a pair of state titles. Still, we might see Howells-Dodge embrace an underdog role as the No. 16 team in the final wildcard hierarchy.

This ranking comes despite a stellar 19-8 mark this fall. Senior leadership remains the big storyline here, with [player_tooltip player_id='834413' first='Kylie' last='Brichacek'], [player_tooltip player_id='829867' first='Audrey' last='Brabec'], and [player_tooltip player_id='836866' first='Peyten' last='Becker'] pacing the offense. Younger contributors are most prevalent at the ball control positions. Junior setter [player_tooltip player_id='930879' first='Riley' last='Svehla'] has excelled while playing around the dial, and 2029 libero Brynn Throener has been similarly productive in the back row.

Arapahoe

Perhaps this is the ultimate underdog.

Arapahoe has one state tournament appearance in its history, and you have to look back to 1995 to find it. It makes this year's 19-5 effort even more impressive, and the Warriors have gained traction to reach Class D1's top dozen. Late wins over Cambridge and Paxton were particularly helpful in making up this ground.

We recently discussed the ever-present impact of junior outside hitter [player_tooltip player_id='1016428' first='Taytum' last='Roskop'], but Arapahoe's depth spans far beyond its six-rotation focal point. Desi Farner and Clara Hilker have enjoyed unprecedented success in their swan song seasons. The Warriors also boast some of the state's loftiest dig numbers, especially with [player_tooltip player_id='930897' first='Suttyn' last='Shafer']'s particularly eye-popping 5.7 per set. That defensive grit will be tested in district competition.

Paxton

Finally, we reach the ever-unpredictable Class D2.

Paxton has captured our attention after battling to a 17-12 record in the ultra-competitive small-town scene. The Tigers were a tournament mainstay in the early 2000s, but the program is eager to end a 15-year postseason hiatus.

Some district heroism could keep Paxton in the mix. Junior attacker [player_tooltip player_id='833036' first='Jakcee' last='Mitchell'] has commanded much of the attention while leading the Tigers in kills, attacking efficiency, and blocks. This all-around star has received plenty of assistance from Olivia McBride and [player_tooltip player_id='817931' first='Reece' last='Glinn'] in the frontcourt. [player_tooltip player_id='801378' first='Cayla' last='Peterson'] and Brynn Kuenning are the future anchors of the ball control phase.
