The Setters and DS/Liberos That Make Everyone Better

Great liberos and defensive specialists extend rallies that appear finished, communicate what others don't see, and bring stability to the moments when matches become chaotic. Their impact isn't always measured by statistics, but their teammates feel it on nearly every rally.   As athletes prepared for the USAV GJNC Showcase, I asked several setters, liberos, and defensive specialists to reflect on the strengths that define their game, the areas they're continuing to develop, the coaching that's shaped them this season, and what they hope college coaches notice when they step onto the court. Their responses revealed athletes who understand that making a team better often begins with communication, composure, anticipation, and the willingness to put teammates in positions to succeed.   The athletes featured below each accomplish that responsibility differently. Some create offensive advantages through decision-making and tempo. Others anchor the backcourt with relentless defense, consistent serve receive, and vocal leadership. Together, they demonstrate that while these positions may not always receive the headlines, they often become the foundation every successful team is built upon.    Melissa Thacker doesn't simply think about running an offense. She thinks about creating one. Every rally begins with preparation, from communicating with her hitters before the serve to disguising her intentions in the air and reading blockers before releasing the ball. She approaches setting like a chess match, constantly searching for ways to create advantages that allow her teammates to attack with confidence instead of forcing difficult swings.   That same intentional approach has shaped her development beyond the technical aspects of the position. Thacker has become deeply invested in the mental side of performance, believing the ability to reset quickly after mistakes can influence an entire team's confidence. Whether she's solving broken plays, setting against the flow, or helping teammates regain composure, her focus remains the same: create belief, create opportunities, and create offense. Every decision begins with reading the defense, recognizing where blockers are leaning, and creating opportunities that give her hitters the best chance to succeed. She takes pride in remaining calm under pressure, allowing thoughtful decision-making, not emotion, to dictate the offense. That steady presence has become one of the defining characteristics of her game.   One area where Cruz has grown significantly is learning to read the opposing block before making every setting decision. Rather than running the same offense repeatedly, she studies defensive tendencies and adjusts tempo, location, and hitter distribution to create favorable matchups. Even when matches become difficult, she focuses on changing the offense, communicating with teammates, and finding solutions one point at a time. Sometimes the offense needs to speed up. Sometimes it needs to slow down. Sometimes confidence is built through a simple, high ball that allows a hitter to reset. That ability to read both the defense and her own teammates has become one of the strongest parts of Brockett's game, allowing her to make decisions that extend well beyond where the ball is set.   One lesson has been especially valuable this season: not every set will be perfect. Rather than carrying mistakes from one rally into the next, Brockett has learned to move forward quickly while continuing to make confident decisions. As a utility player who has experienced multiple positions herself, she naturally understands what hitters are feeling in difficult moments. She wants coaches to notice not only her setting decisions, but the genuine joy, energy, and positivity she brings to every practice and every match. Hallam's growth as a setter has come through simplifying the game instead of overcomplicating it. When pressure rises, she returns to the fundamentals, helping both herself and her teammates focus on the next playable ball rather than the previous mistake. She's also become increasingly intentional about involving her middles, recognizing how balanced offensive distribution creates more one-on-one opportunities across the net. She describes her game as calm and controlled, but never passive. Whether she's playing defense or attacking, she wants her steady demeanor to create confidence for the teammates around her while her vocal leadership keeps everyone connected through every rally. That balance has become one of the defining characteristics of her game.   Perhaps the most consistent part of Schantz's development has been her effort. The score never changes her approach. Whether her team is leading comfortably or fighting to erase a deficit, she believes every point deserves the same level of focus, communication, and intensity. One piece of coaching advice continues to guide her play: stay loose. Rather than dwelling on the previous play, she looks forward to the next chance to apply what she learned. That mental resilience has become one of the strongest parts of her game, allowing her to stay fully engaged while continuing to anchor her team's serve receive and defensive effort.   Lau's attention to detail shows up in the smallest adjustments. This season, coaching feedback challenged her to stop before the hitter contacts the ball, allowing her to explode more efficiently on her first step. It's a subtle technical change that has improved her range defensively while reinforcing her belief that consistency comes from disciplined fundamentals. Rather than avoiding difficult competition, she believes those matches accelerate her development and sharpen the skills that define her game. Her quickness, defensive range, and ability to read hitters allow her to cover significant portions of the court while extending rallies that might otherwise be over.   Equally important is the energy she brings to every match. Valgus wants teammates to feel her enthusiasm and coaches to recognize her willingness to accept real-time feedback. She continues refining her serve receive through measurable passing goals while applying simple coaching reminders to stay relaxed and trust her technique. Whether she's handling serve receive or anchoring the backcourt defensively, she wants teammates to know exactly what they're going to get from her every time she steps onto the floor. Her confidence isn't rooted in making spectacular plays; it's built on delivering dependable ones while creating a positive environment for the players around her.   That reliability begins with staying calm when momentum shifts. Bowen has learned to evaluate what she can control, make the necessary adjustments, and continue encouraging her teammates regardless of the score. Coaching has reinforced the importance of maintaining composure in serve receive, a lesson she continues carrying into every match. She understands that the best defenders aren't always the tallest players on the court. They're often the ones who refuse to let the ball hit the floor.   That mindset has been shaped by lessons learned long before volleyball became a priority. Inspired by her father's military background, Nuno approaches every practice and match with discipline, selflessness, and the belief that effort is always within her control. Coaching has encouraged her to trust her instincts instead of hesitating, allowing her to react faster and play with greater confidence.
