On South Warren’s senior night, both teams put up a great fight for the win, but the Spartans grasped it near the end with a 3-1 finish (25-19, 19-25, 25-17, 28-26).
The Spartans started off with a big lead in the first set 22-12, and Bowling Green tried to come back, but it was too little, too late. They took this energy into the second set where they stole the win because of their dominating service runs by Kaia Barnett, Mackenzie Austin Mackenzie Austin DS/L Bowling Green | 2023 KY , and Anna Neal. Bowling Green’s high school head coach, Tim Sharp, hyped up the game even more when he received his first yellow card of the season. Then, the Spartans rallied back in the third set with a strong lead the entire game. Finally, it was a fourth set thriller where South was down 14-19 and came back to win it at 23-19 and eventually 28-26. Both teams had a great game, but South Warren’s energy and mental toughness eventually put them out on top.
Maddie Rockrohr Maddie Rockrohr 5'6" | OH South Warren | 2022 State KY , junior outside hitter, finished with 11 kills and told BG Daily news that, “It was an emotional night for the seniors.” Rockrohr explained that she wanted this night to be special for them, and her performance was all for senior friends. Paige Logsdon, sophomore outside all-around player, led the team with 12 kills and then sophomore, Kara Gipson, had 10 kills. For their first showing of varsity ever, Logsdon and Gipson performed exceptionally well, so keep an eye out for these underclassmen studs!
For the Bowling Green Purples, senior, Anna Neal, led the team with 12 kills while Charli Hodges Charli Hodges MB Bowling Green | 2021 State KY , junior, had 10 kills and Kenley Woodyard, senior, had 9 kills. Neal not only had the most kills, but her competitive nature helped the team significantly on the floor. Anyone could tell in the stands that she was the leader on and off the court.
It will be interesting to watch the two district rivals as the season goes on because both have so much potential in the volleyball world. The coach for the Bowling Green Purples, Tim Sharp, mentioned that, “It’s all a mental game,” so the kids will eventually grow as their team meshes and gains more confidence.
