Here are five players who established themselves in their sophomore high school seasons.
MH, McKenzie Fairchild McKenzie Fairchild 5'10" | MB Andale | 2023 State KS , 5’10”, Andale – Fairchild unofficially led the Class of 2023 representatives in 4A with 357 kills. During her sophomore season at Andale, she also racked up 56 blocks. She had a big rich and solid blocking technique.
MH, Ava Jones Ava Jones 6'2" | MB Nickerson | 2023 State KS , 6’2”, Nickerson– The Nickerson Panthers have a tall middle hitter who enjoys crushing the ball. Jones finished her sophomore season with 227 kills and 49 blocks. Nickerson will be a team to watch next fall and Jones is one of the main reasons they will compete.
MH, Avrie Wilson, 5’8”, Wamego – Wilson had a nice sophomore season for the Wamego Red Raiders. She finished with 122 kills. Wilson will need to improve her upper body strength over the next two years. She plays high energy and is a solid blocker finishing with 47 in 2020.
MB, Ali Olson, 6’1”, Bishop Miege – What’s not to like about a six-foot-one sophomore? Olson will continue to improve her skills and evolve her athletic frame. She had 110 kills in her sophomore season and added 55 blocks. The Stag program is a solid one and Olson will benefit from the scouting presence in the Kansas City area.
S, Shelbi Wilson Shelbi Wilson 5'9" | S Labette County | 2023 State KS , 5’9”, Labette County – Wilson plays setter for the Grizzlies but still finished with a kill total of 84 in her sophomore season. She finished with 488 assists for Labette County. She is a talented athlete who could play multiple positions.
