I’ve been fortunate to cover in-person a lot of what has happened in the Houston area and it’s been really exciting to see some prospects I already knew of find ways to further improve their games and others that I didn’t surprise me with impressive skill sets.
I’ll take this week to highlight some of the most interesting players I saw during these first four months of coverage in each position, starting now with the setters.
Maddie Waak Maddie Waak 5'10" | S Katy | 2022 State #36 Nation TX – H Skyline 18 Royal – HS: Katy – 2022
Vastly recognized as one of the best setters in her age group in the entire country and ranked third in our 2022 Prep Dig State Rankings, Maddie Waak Maddie Waak 5'10" | S Katy | 2022 State #36 Nation TX continues to impress in her final season of high school volleyball. A lefty, the 5’11” Waak has the privilege of working with a very talented group of hitters, but she makes all of them look even better with her intelligent and precise ball distribution. An LSU commit, she also adds to the team when it comes to defensive work and leadership.
Claire Dewine Claire Dewine 6'1" | S The Woodlands | 2023 State TX – HJV 17 Elite – HS: The Woodlands – 2023
A very complete player, Claire Dewine Claire Dewine 6'1" | S The Woodlands | 2023 State TX used to play a lot of different roles for her high school and previous club teams. She focused only on setting after joining Houston Juniors this season and became even better at it. Dewine has excellent size for the position at 6’1” and is very technical and intelligent. She seems to always be very calm on the court and rarely makes a bad decision. Dewine is also a very good server and defender and does an excellent job when setting against the flow of play. She recently committed to Colgate University.
Madalynn Briggs – Asics Willowbrook 17 Gold – HS: Tomball – 2023
Madalynn Briggs is a key piece in Asics Willowbrook 17 Gold team that’s been enjoying a lot of success in the club season. The 5’9” setter does an excellent job in putting her hitters in a great position to score and excels in her ball distribution in the fast-paced offense she runs. Briggs also does really well when working out-of-system, guaranteeing her hitters will have at the very least a decent set to work with even when passing isn’t great.
Lauren LeRoux – TAV Houston 15 Adidas – HS: Bridgeland – 2025
Lauren LeRoux has the tools to become a very influential player in the state of Texas in years to come. She has excellent size at six feet and is extremely versatile, being able to play as right side hitter too. LeRoux is very technical and uses her superior skills to improvise when the play calls for it, but is also very good when in-system. She has an excellent location on her set and that proves to be a difference-maker, even more, when working away from the net. LeRoux is also a prolific server and defender.
Kirra Musgrove Kirra Musgrove 6'2" | S Lutheran South Academy | 2025 State #12 Nation TX – HJV 15 Elite – HS: Clear Falls – 2025
Kirra Musgrove Kirra Musgrove 6'2" | S Lutheran South Academy | 2025 State #12 Nation TX is one of the most highly-touted setters in the Houston area for good reason. Ranked ninth in our 2025 Prep Dig State Rankings, she’s got the full package when it comes to players in the position. Musgrove is very tall at 6’2”, which makes of her an asset at the net with good blocking and excellent hitting skills. She’s very fluid with the ball in her hands and has reached a level of consistency that’s not typically seen in players of her age. She’s been challenged to work with a group of very talented hitters in a very flexible playing system in her HJV 15 Elite team and responded really well to it. Musgrove is also an excellent server.
