Also, I decided to start sharing what is vital in the highlights and where development could occur. My only rule is if I shared your highlights in the last couple of months I won’t share again until after nationals! Here is what we have for the month of May!
Smith is not from my coverage area but since she tags me often, let me show her some love today. She is a really strong pin with an array of shots. I like how she will take the risk to go hard line while also being able to go thumb down and cut the ball hard. I am really impressed in her ability to score points out of system and attacks the ball with the mindset to deliver a kill.
Highlights
The southpaw brings a punch behind her swings. Being left handed, she is naturally strong on approach and swing from the right pin but her ability to deliver on the left pin in that rotation was fun to watch. She doesn’t waste swings and has a goal with each attempt. She jumps well and will continue to be a headache for opponents.
Highlights
Heckman is a fun setter to watch. She isn’t the flashiest of setters but she is as accurate in her sets and dependable in her location as there is in this age group. I really like how she takes care of her middles and give them ample opportunities to be involved in the offense. An added asset is her ability to play defense in right back. She is solid defensively.
Highlights
Penuel is a 2024 setter who played up on the 18s this year and is a good one. I like her risk taking in sets, meaning she will back set from other side of the court and put it on the money. She does a good job with her jump set to hold the defense just long enough. I thought her sets to the back row were also accurate and in sync with the attacker. She is a player who we should expect to see move up in the rankings after her play this spring.
