Elite Eight
Minnesota is stacked when it comes to the one of the most important positions- MB. Here are some of our top picks for middles in the graduating class and below. Most will go on to play Division I or II. Because of their height, passion, and power.
#1 Seeds: Maizy Jackson helped to grow the program at BSM since her freshmen year. She consistently got 50+ blocks during her high school seasons, well above the national average. We anticipate her to be able to step on and be a major contributor for the Univ. of Northern Iowa next year.
Likewise, Hawk eye’s commit, Blythe Rients, has impressed head coach Shymansky who had this to say about her, “”Blythe is a dynamic and explosive athlete. She has tremendous versatility and works as hard at the net as any player I’ve seen. Blythe is the complete package, and the consummate student-athlete. We expect her to add to our entire team culture on and off the court, and look for her to impact our line-up early in her career.”
Underdogs: Katelyn Empkey from Wayzata high school is a junior developing strong skills as part of the MN Select 17-3’s team. One thing she has down is her blocking technique. At 6’3”, her long reach helps to close the block taking away a large area of opportunity.
From Minnetonka High School, the youngest middle is Kali Engelman. She is currently on the MN Northern Lights 16-2. Her youth (grad. 2021) and raw talent is what caught our eye. Engleman is 6′ now, but plays like experienced, taller middle.
Of course this is a just a hypothetical bracket; however, Nicole Lund and Maizy Jackson could end up jousting at the net next year when UNI takes on Illinois state. Last year UNI won in 3, but Illinois had a slightly better overall record (25-8). Either way, over the next four years, we expect Minnesota middles to be doing big things at the net across the country!
