High school season is right around the corner. Tryouts were the week of August 14th, and league play starts the week of September 4th.
As usual, Prep Dig will be following the action. But until it starts, we will highlight the top players returning in each position.
Next up, the top setters from the 5A classification.
Cammy Gore
Cammy Gore
Gore was a major player for Wilsonville High School last season, where she ran a 6-2 opposite Elli Underhill. For her play, she was awarded Northwest Oregon Honorable Mention. She is athletic and quick to get her hands on the ball. She is an exceptional defender from right back. A returning senior, she will be a big piece of the Wildcat’s success this season.
Haury has been a critical piece of Silverton High School’s success since her freshman season. She has fulfilled the role of six rotation setter and attacker brilliantly, receiving Mid-Willamette MVP, Mid-Willamette First Team All-League, and First Team All-State. Playing club for NPJ 18-1 Forefront, she was their primary setter and helped them succeed at the National level. As the #1 recruit in her class in Oregon and the #9 recruit nationally, it is safe to assume she will be a huge asset for the Bearcats before heading to the University of Washington to play for the Huskies.
Grace Hannan
Grace Hannan
Since her freshman season, Hannan has been vital to Dallas High School’s success. Setting, she has a soft touch on the ball and hustles to get a touch on every ball. Across the front row, she is offensive and puts up a big block. She has confidently executed a 5-1 before and can do it again should the Dragons look to her to fulfill the same role.
Maulding was the lone freshman on LaSalle Prep’s roster last season and saw court time as a setter opposite Avery Richards. Spending her club season training with OJVA 15-1, she dialed in on her setting technique, and her entire game improved tons. With Richards graduating, there is a major hole in the lineup Maulding should be seen stepping in to fill.
Highlights
Mitchell has been a major piece of Crescent Valley High School’s success since her freshman campaign, helping the Raiders secure a 5A State championship last season. She earned Mid-Willamette First Team All-Leauge and 5A Second Team All-State for her standout play. Training with OJVA 16-1 last season, she juggled running a 6-2 or 5-1, depending on the team’s needs. She showcases an incredibly high volleyball IQ and great court vision as a settter. A recent dual-sport University of Oregon commit (beach and court), there is no doubt Mitchell will be critical in the Raider’s quest to achieve a second State championship.
A setter, Schnell was a key piece in Corvallis High School’s success last season. She received Mid-Willamette Honorable Mention for her outstanding play. Coming into the club season, she was an under the radar recruit. However, she executed a 5-1 for G3 16-1 and led them t#7 finish in the Open Division. She has risen to the top of her class given her improvement and will be an athlete to watch this season.
Highlights
Underhill had a breakout sophomore season for Wilsonville High School, running a 6-2 opposite Cammy Gore. She trained with NPJ Portland 16-1 this past club season and improved by leaps and bounds. Standing at 6 feet and a leftie, she will be a major offensive weapon, whether attacking or setting for the Wildcats..
