Continue ReadingMany fans cheer for the underdog in big game, but in these matches there isn’t really one. This Friday and Saturday, there will be a handful of 4th and 5th seeded match ups; these are often some of the best during playoffs. It is possible that they are rivals ready to prove they are the top team. The lower seed may feel slighted and have more to prove, while the top typically has home court advantage. Here is a look at the upcoming match-ups and insight to help you make your own predictions.
1AA Lake City (4) vs. Lewiston Altura (5) Saturday 11:30 am
The Lake City Tigers have struggled with injuries this season, but will have a big height
advantage if everyone is healthy particularly Grace Bany (6’3”, jr.) The Tigers are used to tough
competition as a part of the Hiwatha Valley League, compared to Lewiston’s Three Rivers. But
The Cardinals will have an advantage at the service line and may be able to throw off Lake City’s
offense. Vanessa Rojas (DS, sr) and Ciarra McNally (OH, sr.) both have wicked serves. The
match takes place at a neutral site – Rochester Mayo Civic Center. It is a big stage and nerves
may be a factor.
1AAA Mayo Spartans (4) vs. Lakeville South (5) Friday 7pm
Lakeville South has had a trying season with a 15-13 record. Their play has been inconsistent
unable to get into a rhythm. However, their big players Ava Moes, Kendyl Storelie,
and Teagan Starkey know how to perform under pressure. Likewise, Mayo has a lot of highs and
lows thus far. They come off a strong win over Tracy Milroy. Their will need to play a game
with few errors to defeat Lakeville. Kennedy Hady (5’9” jr.), Anna Miller (6’3” jr.), and Kelly
Klees (6′ sr)will lead the way for the Spartans.
2AAA Eden Prairie (4) vs Hutchinson (5) Friday 7pm
This is anyone’s game. Nearly the same record and equally talented athletes on both sides
of the net! Expect long rallies, lots of lead changes, and strategic game plans from the coaches
Chad Becker and Dennis Piechowski.
My predictions:
7AAA Elk River (4) over Grand Rapids (5). Elk River has faced tougher competition overall. Match is Friday 7pm.
8AAA Monticello (5) over Alexandria(4). Monticello has a better record and a lot of young talent! Match is Friday 7pm
We know anything is possible in the game of volleyball. Goodluck to all the teams!
