About Joelle

How would you briefly describe your gameplay style?

My gameplay is smooth but also disciplined. I am able to make fast moves towards the ball in defense with my quick reaction time. I am also calm on serve receive as I don’t panic after one ace but think about how to better the ball the next serve that comes to me.

Can you provide a brief description of your mentality or personality?

My mentality has gotten stronger every year that I play. Every year I have been faced with many challenges; not feeling like I'm good enough, holding onto my mistakes, and feeling less than my other teammates. I have learned that only I am responsible for myself, only I am able to turn the negative into a positive thought. Which makes me a passionate and fierce competitor.

Are you involved in any clubs, organizations, or have you received any non-sport awards?

I am apart of my high school’s Red Cross Club and our Orchestra GT. In 2022 I was a nominee for the Junior All State as a violist.

What skills or qualities have you developed, such as leadership, teamwork, or community service?

I have developed teamwork as I have grown playing this sport with different teammates every year but, I find ways to make the new team feel like one. The new players come with not only new talent but also new attitudes that can help us win games and become mentally stronger together.

Have you faced any significant challenges? If so, please describe.

I tore my UCL at the end of my 15s season and felt defeated. Recovery was rough with high school tryouts approaching, but my friends, family, and doctors supported me throughout. Physical therapy was rough once the splint came off, especially with my weak left hand, but I worked hard to get back to 100%. I’m so grateful for everyone who helped me return to the court, it felt like I never left.

What type of college are you looking for?

I am looking for a college that not only fits my athletic needs but also academic. I am very passionate about animals and would love to major in animal science and biology to become a veterinarian! Therefore I want to attend a college that has a strong veterinary program to help me achieve my career goals.

JoJo is a talented DS who plays on a very deep Howard team in HS. She’s got a solid platform and makes good passes, doesn’t make a lot of mistakes, and covers her area as well as you could ask anyone. She plays in one of the lead DS roles for Maryland Juniors, and should be a strong contributor for Howard this coming season as a legit state title threat. Her consistency is her biggest strength, allowing teams to focus on other areas of need, knowing that she’s going to cover her ground.
