Bluegrass Tournament Sound Day One Hitters

Some players have decided to play in classes above their ages trying to improve their games. Assumption freshman [player_tooltip player_id='611724' first='Brooke' last='Codey'] and Westfield sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='443848' first='Carsyn' last='Comer'] are two of them. Codey plays up to the KIVA 16 Red and Comer plays up to the Munciana 18 Samurai. Comer and some other hitters had big first days in the Bluegrass Tournament in Louisville.    Comer (pictured) displayed a strong, quick arm swing, taking a number of powerful swings against a strong NKYVC 18-1 Tsunami team, helping the Samurai go 3-0 in 18 Open Power Pool 2 action. Comer uses her size well. Comer puts up solid double blocks and is very coachable. Comer said listening to her coaches and teammates has helped adjust to the tough level.     Dunning took a number of sound swings for the Tri-Star Juniors 17-1 team. Dunning hits balls hard to the floor and off blockers. She also makes things happen out of system. She used her left hand to land a kill and finish the game against the TPV 18-Renegade. Dunning said leaning forward and snapping the ball helps her put more power on balls.     Slusher continues to use her size well taking sound follow-throughs, especially on line shots. Slusher creates one-on-one matchups for her teammates. Slusher also did a good job with net protection helping the 17 Blue team go 3-0 in 17 Open Pool Play 2 action.     Benkert uses her size well to dominate the net. She runs great fakes helping out her teammates and is a sound one-on-one and double blocker. She puts down overpasses with authority and showed she can win jousts at the net with good blockers. Benkert had a number of sizzling serves Friday.     Mains adjusts well in mid-air to find different ways to put balls down. Mains can even hit balls off blockers at sound angles. Mains is not afraid to take big swings when the team needs a point.     Schiller takes big swings from all six positions. However, her defense stood out Friday. She had an outstanding pancake dig in one game. Schiller showed she can dig up tough hitters. Schiller is also a vocal leader on the court.     Redlinger uses her size to control the net well. She has sound timing on her blocks and puts down overpassed balls with authority. Redlinger made a number of sound passes Friday and covered the net well. Redlinger said lots of training and listening to other blockers tell her when to go up are keys to solid blocking.
