SoCal Sophomore ID MVPs: Coaches Highlight Standouts

I had the privilege of attending the SoCal PrepDig Sophomore ID Camp, hosted at Prime Volleyball Club in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA. One of the most rewarding aspects of this event was watching the on-site coaches select their own MVPs, players who stood out not just for their athletic abilities, but for the complete package they brought to the court.   Each coach evaluated players firsthand, observing more than just stats or standout plays. They paid close attention to communication, coachability, hustle, and the subtle ways athletes elevated those around them.   This process closely mirrors how college coaches scout talent. It's not always about who jumps the highest or hits the hardest. It's about finding players with a rare blend of skill, work ethic, and character, the kind of presence that leaves a lasting impression.   What made this MVP selection so meaningful was the freedom each coach had to define what excellence looked like. For some, it was leadership and vocal presence. For others, it was resilience, relentless effort, or the ability to make an impact without even touching the ball. Tess described herself as the loudest and most hype player on the floor, and it showed. She led with confidence, consistently lifting up her teammates through clear communication, smart strategy, and unshakable positivity. Whether celebrating a big point or relaying adjustments based on what she saw across the net, she was a steady, vocal presence that brought her team together.   In high-pressure moments, Tess keeps her cool by focusing on her teammates and maintaining strong mental discipline. She uses connection, whether it's a high-five, a quick glance, or a word of encouragement, to stay grounded and reset. This season, she's committed to improving her net play as a 6-rotation setter, working on her blocking and dump game to become more aggressive and effective in the front row. Off the court, Tess is known for her outgoing, bubbly personality and deep sense of empathy. As a libero, Sade sees her role as both an executor and a communicator. She lifts her teammates by being reliable, vocal, and supportive, creating space for others to succeed by clearly owning her own. She stays composed in high-pressure moments through mental resets, technical check-ins, and a healthy emotional balance that allows her to stay grounded and motivated. Known by coaches and teammates as stable, neutral, and empathetic, Sade supports her team both with her calm presence and her ability to cover more court when needed.
