The coaches and players have been working to develop dynasties and while we know many of the big names in these programs, their success lies in their depth. Here are 5 athletes ready to step up and storm the court for the class of A:
Mayer Lutheran has earned a reputation for some of the biggest, toughest hitters in single A, and fueling the efforts of their amazing players are their setters. Emma Lade is the the next compelling setter. In 2019, the 5’8” setter saw a good deal of court time as the secondary setter in their 6-2 offense. As a sophomore she proved she has what it takes to become a top prospect. When they were challenged by rivals Lade’s excelled because of her endurance. She was able to rack up countless assists in their five-set matches: 51 assist vs. Concordia, 56 vs WEM, and and 44 vs Belle Plaine. As they moved toward playoffs we saw them utilize her size more and more. This upcoming season Lade will be the face of their offense.
The Belle Plaine Tigers will have a hard time moving having graduated four strong seniors, but Lauren Johnson (cover photo) has what it takes to help lead them to another state tournament. She is the perfect example of a player who knows their role. Each game she showed up ready to put in the work to contribute in every statistic. She is a key component in their serve receive; an area where little recognition is given, but is imperative to the offense. Likewise, her defense helped them outlast competitors in important matches. During the section tournament she had 31 digs against Southwest Christian.
Although they didn’t rely on her as a main scorer on offense, she always found ways to get her kills. A strategic hitter, who takes advantage of being under the radar and catches defenses out of position. Her accuracy has always been high and this year we will see her get more opportunities to score.
Next up, in Caledonia, the players have a reputation for being one of the strongest teams in the Three Rivers Conference. Their strength and conditioning regimen has produced NFL players and Division 1 Volleyball standouts. Lyza Hoscheit is a prime example of the Warriors program. At 5’11” her physical presence is compelling. They use her in the middle and on the right-side. A talented blocker who has developed a fast arm-swing and is utilized across the front row. They will lose their two top offensive players, but Hoscheit has the strength to step into a leadership role for her senior year.
Kenyon Wanamingo nearly beat Medford in the section tournament last season and will doubt come into 2020 with an agenda. Among the returners is 6’1” Hailey Lerfald. She is dynamic player for the Knights: blocking across the net, running quick-hits, and bringing intensity to every play. Lerfald works tirelessly to close every block, making her teammates better defenders. While she wasn’t a leading scorer for the team, she added endless energy and kills when given opportunities.
Lakeview Lakers had a great year finishing the regular season with a 22-2 record. Returning for her senior year is Kiana Imes. At 5’5” Imes is a small outside hitter with big energy and technical skill. With their libero graduating, Imes could likely step into this position; however, they may still utilize her speed in the front row too. Her intensity on the court overpowers opponents. She is a three-sport athlete who’s aggressive style of play boosts her teammates while producing jaw-dropping plays.
