Weekend 2 of the USAV Iowa Regionals went down this past weekend at the RecPlex in West Des Moines. The 15U Division featured really good teams and players competing at a high level throughout.

*A note on who's featured in this write-ups: They're student-athletes I'd not yet written evaluations for this club season. Plenty of players stood out in West Des Moines that have evaluations from the campaign.

I've enjoyed watching Zmolek's game develop during the last few seasons. The South Tama County sophomore has provided an advantage for her teams against most opponents on the right-side of the net. Her height and long arms are complemented by explosiveness off of the court and excellent leaping ability. The talents allow for ending points with authority or sending the attack back to opponents via the block. Zmolek changes a lot of swings even when she doesn't get her hands on the ball. The CIA standout gets on top of the ball when on the attack and generates power. Zmolek has worked hard at becoming a six-rotation opposite pin, holding up well in serve-receive and defending in the back row. She also shows potential swinging from the outside pin. Zmolek ranked second among Trojans with 177 kills (.349) last fall. She also contributed 34.0 blocks.

Burkhardt was one of only two freshmen to see varsity playing time at Cedar Falls in 2025. Having steadily watched her progress through club ball the last few years, that was not surprising. I'd also expect a leap forward for the Tigers this coming fall after watching her compete at the USAV Iowa Regionals in late March, when her Six Pack team finished second and earned an American Division bid to this summer's Nationals. Burkhardt stands out for her versatility and hard-nosed play. An impressive vertical leap and power generated from a heavy swing make her a factor on the attack. She can put the ball down from any spot along the net, showing comfort on the right-side, which can be tricky for some folks. Burkhardt times blocks well, helping her contribute consistently up front. She's athletic and moves well, aiding her in flowing with the action.

I hadn't seen Steinkamp playing in person until the USAV Iowa Regional tournament in West Des Moines during late March. The ADM freshman was an integral part of a RVA team that rose from a second seed in its pool to a fifth-place overall finish in earning a Freedom Division bid to this summer's National Tournament in Indianapolis. She was operating through six rotations as a right-side hitter. The lefty pressured opponents from the pin with a heavy swing resulting from a lofty vertical leap and hang time. Steinkamp reads the block well and consistently finds holes in the defense to exploit. She adjusts well to the set and usually gets off a good attack. On defense, Steinkamp combines the leaping ability with good timing and keen reading of the attack to out up an effective block. Positional flexibility opens up opportunities to end points all along the net.

Few players in Iowa's 2029 Class have improved as much as Galvan during the last year. You can tell she's worked hard at sharpening all parts of her game, and it showed when scouting her at the USAV Iowa Regional Tournament during late March in West Des Moines. On a United 15-1 Elite team with high-level prospects at outside hitter and in the middle of the net, Galvan solidifies the front row with her consistent production at the opposite pin. The Solon freshman makes the most of her opportunities on the attack, utilizing long arms and leaping ability to generate power in the swing. She flows well with the play, helping her get positioned to throw up a productive block. Galvan has room to become physically stronger as she matures, adding to her potential to keep getting better. She'll look to build on a ninth-grade campaign that saw her contribute 108 kills (.206) and 34.0 blocks. If you're looking for a breakout player for this upcoming prep season, Galvan would be an excellent choice.

Dowling Catholic graduated one of the state's top right-side hitters from its 2025 lineup. Brunkhorst showed during late March's USAV Iowa Regional Tournament in West Des Moines that she's a candidate to step into a varsity role this coming fall. The lefty-swinging opposite pin is athletic and explosive on the court. She can rise up into the air and hang before bringing down the hammer on the attack. Brunkhorst does well in reading the block and the opponent's back-row alignment, leading success in putting the ball down. When in rhythm, she can hit line and across the court with equal precision. Tall with long arms, Brunkhorst has the natural gifts necessary for achieving resistance with the block. She combines them with timing and a solid feel for the opposition's intent. Brunkhorst is one to watch moving forward this club season and in the fall.
