Austin Kingsley | Prep Dig Scout
Lincoln East was stacked with middle blocker talent last year, but it might be the unquestioned focal point of the offense this season. Merten adds to that strength with her quickness off the floor and range behind the setter. She will find ways to make plays no matter which system the Spartans deploy this fall. Such adaptability was evident as Merten represented VCNebraska in the spring.

Let’s stick with this 17 Black roster. Merten always seems to bring her best when the qualifier grind starts, and that was the case again in 2024. She has evolved into an unstoppable ‘gap’ hitter who can efficiently push past opposing blocks. Merten’s lateral quickness allows her to run in tandem with her setter when passes are drifting toward the pin. All of these technical skills give Merten an edge as she gears up for another championship run.

We’re excited to see how Merten can perform now that she’s risen up to the varsity ranks. She brings a ton of physicality to the middle blocker spot, which has been a typical strong point for Lincoln East over the past few years. Merten will now expand on a successful 2023 stretch that produced plenty of highlight moments at VCN.

The Lincoln area has some rising 2025 middles of its own. Merten has made a big splash with VCNebraska 16 Black this year, helping to demonstrate the kind of depth that this club is building. Look for this Lincoln East product to do much of her scoring right in front of the setter, and it’s also worth mentioning Merten’s pivotal role in generating block touches for 16 Black’s defense.
