Artiga plays defense, period! She had one of the best digs in the entire showcase, the kind of read and reaction speed that makes a back row feel settled no matter what is coming across the net. She works to keep every ball off the floor, and that effort does not fade late in sets or in tight rallies. She communicates constantly, and her voice is one that lifts teammates rather than just directing traffic. When her team is grinding, she is the one cheering them on, and that energy is contagious in a gym full of coaches watching how athletes respond under pressure.
What separates Artiga is not just the ball control, it is what she brings around it. She operates with a work ethic that shows up point after point, and she talks about that mentality with real clarity.
Work ethic is to commit to things even when they are hard, it’s pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone,. It’s also being able to have continuous self improvement, never getting comfortable and striving to get better showing up to every event you can.
That mindset is visible in how she competes, and it carries into how she leads. Leadership, to her, is about influence more than volume.
What leadership means to me is inspiring, guiding and influencing other people to work together towards a shared goal. Whether that means helping others stay motivated, or it’s to be there for your team even when it is or isn’t needed.
She backs that up with a definition of sportsmanship that reflects how she carried herself the entire showcase.
Sportsmanship means showing respect, fairness and positive attitude not only to your teammates and coach but to other opponents and referees,. Even when you lose, you have to be able to have a positive attitude and mindset. Because at the end of the day everyone wants the same goals as you and everyone wants to be treated with respect.
Artiga is the type of back row player college coaches look for when they are building a culture, not just a roster. She competes with consistency, she communicates with purpose, and she understands that leadership is something you demonstrate rather than announce. That combination is why she is this event’s Avoli Committed Athlete.
