About Samantha

How would you briefly describe your gameplay style?

All of my coaches have described me as a cerebral player. I translate that as they see me thinking hard on the court. It's not always the most powerful play - but the smartest play that succeeds.

Can you provide a brief description of your mentality or personality?

I care deeply about my team and how we rise, together. I work hard independently, in privates, regularly (as well as multiple team practices and lifting) because privates are code for teamwork. The better I do, and the better skills I bring to the court, the better we are as a team.

Are you involved in any clubs, organizations, or have you received any non-sport awards?

I have been on honor roll from the start of middle school - even during pandemic. I am also an artist and had a number of my pieces featured in the school art show this year. I have participated in Junior Guards for the last 4 years - had to skip this year in order to double-down for volleyball practice in prep for JGNCs (so exciting).

What skills or qualities have you developed, such as leadership, teamwork, or community service?

In my 11s - 13s years, I learned to love volleyball. In my 14s year, I learned to be part of a real team. There was maturing to be done. In my 15s year, I learned to double down and fight for playtime. This high school season, I’m our JV Team Captain - there’s learning there too; leading by example and exercising grace and kindness. I will never be done growing and learning, as a player.

Have you faced any significant challenges? If so, please describe.

I'm 5'9 (folks say that's a challenge in volleyball). I can touch 9'8" on my approach and 9'2" blocking - so, is it really a challenge?

What type of college are you looking for?

I'm looking for a school with the right academics where I can continue to play volleyball at a competitive level. I want to study Law, eventually. I love the academic process. I balance the demands of honors classes (and summer school) with the rigorous schedule of a top-10 15s team in SCVA. Mizuno expects a lot from players - it's preparing me for the college volleyball experience.
