The event, however, didn’t end on Sunday as we’ve been taking the time to recognize and give a shoutout to the players who impressed the most with their skills. My colleague and fellow Prep Dig Scout Mallori Howington has already featured some of the defensive specialists/liberos that did a great job in the event, so I’ll just go ahead and add a few more names to the conversation.
An important piece in her Lake Creek high school team that just competed in the State Tournament, Schramm was on fire when I watched her in action on court 5. She was very efficient and reliable with her passing, got some impressive digs and displayed that hard-working attitude everyone loves to see in a libero. Schramm is very clean with her actions and is always very focused and on the right spot to make a play.
Highlights
Angeles is one of the most dynamic and entertaining liberos I’ve watched during the high school season and she delivered just that on our Top 250 Expo. She has always been great from a technical standpoint but now seems more confident in her game and comfortable enough to really step up and lead her team from the backcourt. She was also very active and engaged on the scrimmage-like drills, stepping up to make the first contact whenever possible.
Lopez went against some of the toughest hitters of our event and held her own on court 1, displaying the same solid and efficient game that made of her a key player for her Deer Park team during the high school season. She’s very dynamic and quick in her movement toward the ball, which makes her have great success when chasing tips or roll shots. Her great mobility also helps on serve-receive.
A State Tournament runner-up with her high school Tompkins, Merrell has emerged as one of the most promising liberos in the entire state and that feeling only grew stronger with her performance at the Top 250 Expo. Also capable of playing as a setter, she’s extremely technical and has only gotten better with her positioning. I’ve watch her repeatedly pass dimes during one of the drills and also make good plays on defense.
Smith was another defensive standout in our event. She has good size and length and played a big role as an outside hitter for Cy-Fair during the last high school season, but will be on the backcourt with her club TAV, where she can make the most of her strong defensive game. Smith is great at reading plays and anticipating moves and always seems to be one step ahead of everyone else. She also plays with a a smile on her face and great energy.
