The event, however, didn’t end on Sunday as now it’s time we recognize and give a shoutout to the players who impressed the most with their skills. My colleague and fellow Prep Dig Scout Mallori Howington has already listed some of the setters that stood out to her eyes, so I’ll just follow it up and drop some names that impressed me as well.
Dumas is kind of a must-watch player every time I go out to scout at a club tournament. Her game is so smooth and there’s really nothing she can’t do on the court. Dumas wears a lot of different hats for her high school team Paetow and will be a big part of what is expected to be a strong AVA 16 Adidas team during the club season. She’s an excellent ballhandler and as a lefty, tall setter, she plays very aggressively when at the net. Dumas has also great attitude on the court, looking always very calm and relaxed.

It had been a while since I had last watched LeRoux play and it was great to see how much progress she’s made since then. The talent has always been there for her and she always stood out for her size, but there was something different (for the better) in her game during the Top 250 Expo. Her release was really clean and the ball would leave her hands with little or no spin at all during drills, indicating she’s worked a lot on it. She always seemed more mature, displaying a calmer demeanor on the court and making good decisions in the scrimmage-like drills.

Very dynamic and energetic, Doty was among the most intriguing setters in action during the Top 250 Expo. Her game is very technically sound and there’s not really much to add to her game when it comes to handling the ball or playing defense – she can also play as a defensive specialist/libero. Doty also has a very positive and competitive attitude on the court, which makes of her a great teammate. I’m looking forward to watching her again during the club season.

Davis was another technically-sound setter to show what she’s about during the Top 250 Expo. She has a really nice touch on the ball, is capable of pushing it to the pin from anywhere on the court and is typically very calm and smart with her ball distribution. Davis also has good size, works really hard on defense and plays an important leadership role in the teams she plays.

King was one of several players from Manvel High School to stand out in the event. She backed up the excellent Kennedy Massie in her freshman season, but did a great job in using the Top 250 Expo to show she’s also a great setter. The main strength in King’s game is that she’s a true all-around player, who masters most of the skills and can play different roles for the teams she plays for, being capable of hitting from the right or filling in as a defensive specialist.
