A lot of these athletes established themselves on the high school courts, but now they are looking to catch the eye of college coaches. Here are some names from both sides of the state who are bound to breakout and be on the rise among the top sophomores in the state.
Highlights
Hanfelt is a bundle of power and finesse with a really dynamic skillset as a middle blocker. Watching her at the Iowa Top 250, I could see how explosive she was and how she could really be a mismatch problem for the other side of the net. Beyond volleyball, she is also one of the top track and field athletes in the state where she has already cleared 5’5 in the high jump and is a top hurdler. This Iowa PowerPlex 515 squad has a lot of exciting pieces and plenty of depth, they will be ones to watch all season.
I was sold on Pratt watching her at the state tournament when Ankeny Centennial defeated Dowling in five sets where Pratt was so active. She plays with such an intensity that is contagious for her team. She is one of the top all around athletes in the Class of 2025 where she is also a top basketball player where she is averaging nearly double figures in points for the #5 Jaguars. She was one of the top players in the Class 5A tournament this past fall. I am so happy to see athletes like Hanfelt and Pratt excelling in multiple sports.
Buysee is a swiss army knife type of player for Iowa Rockets where she can libero or swing on the outside. She’s been a key piece for West Liberty High School where she was an All State outside hitter for the Comets enroute to back to back state tournament appearances. Her future at the next level could be as a libero. She is quick, well trained, and a high IQ. Her on court intangibles are extremely positive, she’s so gritty.
Adrenaline has some big time athletes at the 16s level, but one to keep tabs on this season is Sydney Maue Sydney Maue RS Mount Vernon | 2025 State IA . She is long, athletic, and left handed where she has a high contact point on the right side. She can also provide a strong block. This is going to be a key mismatch for their opponents with the likes of Chloe Meester Chloe Meester OH Mount Vernon | 2025 State #37 Nation IA on the other pin they can really stretch the front row. Adrenaline won the Six Pack Invite this past weekend.
Allard saw some time for North Scott this past fall enroute to another final four appearance for the Lancers ‘ last=”]’ last=”]. This is a program that has established themselves as a top team to contend with in Class 4A. She will be part of the Iowa Select 16 Mizuno squad who will be competitive in the Iowa Region this 2023 season where she will look to make connections with one of the top setters in the state in Ellie Schubert Ellie Schubert 5'9" | S Davenport Assumption | 2025 State IA .
Highlights
The Pack is back! There is plenty of depth on this squad where they will look to be one of the top teams in the region and will contend at the open level at national qualifiers. Schmadeke preps at Waterloo West and has a lot to offer in all six rotations as a setter. She has the length to be a presence at the net and has the game IQ to find her open attackers or take it herself. This Six Pack team has a powerful front line, but also a core of attackers who can score from the backrow as well.
Highlights
Harderson is another lefty who is extremely dynamic where she can set and score from the right side. I was able to see her at the state tournament as well as the Iowa Top 250 and her game was consistent where she can score in plenty of ways, extremely dynamic. With an athlete like Harderson, there are multiple ways she can be utilized depending which matchup tilts in her side’s favor. A left handed setter who can turn and burn or even a six rotation right side who can attack out of the backrow is such an advantage to have.
Hacker was a big time player for Sioux City Heelan where the Crusaders made it back to the state tournament this past fall. She will play for MVP United out of the Sioux City.Dakota Dunes area where they were national champions in the 15 Club Division at AAU Nationals where Hacker was named to the All Star team. She has a lot of physicality at the net where she can score from any front row position and her backrow game is evolving. She has an incredibly high ceiling.
